In 2009,Todd Bol put up a Little Free Library with used boards (木板).That was to show his love for his mother, who was a book lover. The idea quickly spread and Todd soon set up Little Free Library as a non-profit (非盈利的) organization with a sign that reads "Little Free Library:Take a Book,Leave a Book." Today there are about 100,000 little free libraries in over 100 countries and they have a great influence on people's life.
Studies have shown that books have a meaningful influence on improving children's literacy (識字).Children who love reading can do well at school.
Little Free Library can greatly improve the relationship among neighbours and strangers, too. "There are many little libraries in people's front yards, sharing the joy of reading with anyone who passes by.I just live in such a world where books are highly valued," Catherine,an American woman, said. "I've even got a note of thanks from a gentleman named Esteban. He was thankful to have a "friend" on a cold night: "Thank you for this wonderful gift of a book. It's an excellent "friend" on this cold and lonely night.I'll return one in its place as soon as I can!"
Hopefully, when each building has such a library,we will soon have a society where people don't spend time on the phone, they spend time on books instead.

  • 1.Most of your textbooks are single use. After graduating, old text books are thrown away, which is a big waste of money and paper.
Many countries already reuse their textbooks. In the US,book companies will come to schools and buy used books. They then resell them to new students the following year at a lower price.A high school textbook in the US can have up to eight owners before it is no longer in a good enough condition to be used, according to Xinhua. The book can then be recycled.
In China, according to the National Press and Publication Administration, students across the country buy 2.8 billion new textbooks every year.If the students of the following year could reuse these textbooks,it would save over 20 billion yuan each year. That's enough money to build 40,000 primary schools,China Daily noted.
Primary and junior high school students in several Chinese cities are reusing music, arts, science and IT textbooks. That's because students don't have to take down many notes in their textbooks for these subjects, which makes them suitable for reusing.

Changes in curricula also make it hard to reuse textbooks. "I'm among the first group of students to take classes after the recent curricular reform,so I have to buy new textbooks that previous students didn't use," Sun Run,a high school student from Hangzhou.
Though China has met difficulties on the way to reusing textbooks, the government need to do something to push the second- hand textbook business in the schools. We should go ahead with the project for the future development.
