Haze Mabry, who has worked as a school keeper for thirteen years, walks into the school building every day and empties garbage cans, wipes down bathrooms and mops wet messes in the hallways.
Last Friday, after he arrived at the school, instead of finding garbage to clean up,he found almost 800 students lining the hallways with handmade cards, blowing noisemakers and singing a full-throated happy birthday to him.It was his 80th.As he walked the long hallway, some popped out of line to hug him. They handed him so many cards that they filled several large boxes.Touched by their enthusiastic expression of affection,Mabry thanked them all. "They're like my children," Mabry said.
On a regular day, students at the school sometimes come up to him to say they're not feeling well or other times to tell him about something that happened at break. He knows most of the kids at the school, but can't name each one. Some of them make him know them.Like Faith, who often forgets her backpack in the cafeteria, and Lucy, who just wants a hug.
"He won't brag (夸耀)on himself, but it doesn't matter what he's doing or where he is,he will always stop what he's doing to take care of a child if that child is having a bad day.If a child approaches him,he will pause to give that child his undivided attention. He's the most loved one in this building,"said Lori Gilreatli,a reading teacher.
Mabry works circles around all the students, cleaning up messes others don't want to touch. He doesn't expect a lot.Mabry said he hadn't planned to do much for his milestone birthday,so he was happy the students had prepared the surprise celebration.
Over the weekend,he worked through the piles of handmade cards at his house. One card from a student stood out to him.It read: "Mr.Haze, you are my sunshine."

  • 1.Easy Ways to Build Vocabulary It's not all that hard to build an advanced and large vocabulary.Like many things in life,it's (1)
ongoing process, and the best part of the process is that there's enough room for improvement, (2)
means you'll just keep getting better and better.Of course you have to work at it.You wouldn't think that a few(3)
(month) of exercise in your teens would be enough (4)
the rest of your life, and that's also true for building your vocabulary-you have to keep at it daily, and pretty soon you will find that you have an excellent vocabulary.
        One of the(5)
(effect) ways to build vocabulary is to read good books. You need to (6)
(real) read at least one good book a week, preferably a classic. This isn't as hard as it(7)
(sound),and it is far better than any other method because you improve your vocabulary while (8)

(they) use unconsciously, meaning that you will tend to use the words (10)

  • 2.How many hours do you spend sitting in a chair every day?Eight hours in the office plus three hours in front of the TV after work is the usual situation for many people.
You probably don't need an expert to tell you that sitting too much is not good for your health-from an increased risk of heart disease and obesity(肥胖) in the long term,to reduced cholesterol(膽固醇) maintenance in the short term, not to mention the pressure on your neck and spine(脊柱).
To make matters worse,a growing body of research suggests that the negative effects of sitting too much cannot be countered with a good diet and regular exercise, according to an article in The New York Times. The article reported that a study of nearly 9,000 Australians found that for each additional hour of television a person watched per day,the risk of dying rose by 11 percent. In other words, sitting is killing us.
Stand up for health.Health experts suggest we break up those many hours spent sitting with more hours spent standing.
The BBC and the University of Chester in the UK conducted a simple experiment with a small group of 10 volunteers who usually spent most of the day sitting. They were asked to stand for at least three hours a day.The researchers took measurements on days when the volunteers stood, and when they sat around. When they looked at the data, there were some striking differences.Blood sugar became level after a meal much quicker on the days when the volunteers in the study stood compared with the days they spent in a chair.Standing also burned more calories(熱量單位:卡路里)-about 50 calories an hour.Over the course of a year that would add up to about 30,000 extra calories,or around 3.63 kilograms of fat.
John Buckley,a member of the research team, said that although doing exercise offers many proven benefits, our bodies also need the constant, almost imperceptible(感覺不到的) increase in muscle activity that standing provides.Simple movement helps us to keep our all-important blood sugar under control.
The researchers believe that even small adjustments, like standing while talking on the phone, going over to talk to a colleague rather than sending an e-mail,or simply taking the stairs instead of the elevator, will help.
(Note:Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN TEN WORDS.)

78.According to the context, the underlined expression"be countered with"in Paragraph 3 can best be replaced by"
    ".
79.The two findings of the simple experiment conducted by the BBC and the University of Chester in the UK are that standing

80.Why is standing better than doing exercise according to John Buckley?

81.What does the passage mainly want to tell us?

  • 3.Everyone is faced with problems at some point or the other. (1)
The problems, however, become different when past strategies do not work and there is no obvious solution. This can cause anxiety and stress. However, all you need to do is remain calm and use a new, different method. Here are some easy ways to solve problems.
Acknowledge that there is a problem. Many people refuse to acknowledge that there is a problem. They continue thinking everything will disappear on its own,so they fail to seek timely help. This does not help the situation in any way. (2)

Keep a journal.Keeping a daily journal is the best way to solve deeper problems that may be affecting your peace of mind. (3)
Sometimes, just by writing down issues, you might get to see that a problem isn't as big as you are thinking.
       (4)
Often,to solve a problem, you need to test your limits. You may have to take on certain challenges including learning something new to improve yourself. If you continue thinking of the problem as a threat and view yourself as a failure or a weak person, you will not be able to deal with the problem.Nevertheless,if you can see some benefits coming out of the problem, you will be in a better position to accept the challenge and learn something new.
       Seek help. (5)
If you are still unable to solve the issue despite giving it much thought and attention, seek help from friends, colleagues, family or even professionals.
