  • 11."The world's loneliest elephant" Kaavan, has reached Cambodia --- on a flight of over 4,000km from Pakistan - and will spend his days at the Cambodia Wildlife Sanctuary in the country's northwest.
Animal experts began the task of airlifting Kaavan on November 29.His departure from Pakistan marks the end of a campaign led by local activists and American singer and actress Cher, who has been campaigning for the elephant's freedom since 2016.She is the co-founder of the NGO Free The Wild, which has played an important role in Kaavan's relocation.Earlier in October,a veterinarian(獸醫(yī))from Four Paws,Dr Amir Khalil, took the responsibility of moving Kaavan, whose rescue has been described as "the heaviest one" the organisation has undertaken.Cher tweeted to thank Pakistan's prime minister for making the rescue possible.
A special crate (板條箱)was especially built for the elephant, who weighs more than five tons and is more than three metres high.Kaavan was also trained by an elephant expert for several weeks to make sure that he could enter the crate safely. On the journey,Kaavan was accompanied by wildlife veterinarians and over 200 kg of food.Kaavan is also Pakistan's last Asian elephant and with his departure, the zoo where he was housed for over three decades may close soon, because many animals have been reported missing or dead in recent years. The zoo has repeatedly made headlines for its increasingly awful conditions.
According to the animal welfare organisation Four Paws,Kaavan came to the Pakistan zoo 35 years ago and shared his room with Saheli. After his "only companion" Saheli died in 2012,Kaavan was reported to be listless and even started showing signs of mental illness.
Luckily,Kaavan has found his relocation.Cambodian deputy environment minister Neth Pheaktra said,"Our zoo is pleased to welcome Kaavan. No longer will he be the world's loneliest elephant. We expect to breed Kaavan with local elephants. This is an effort to save the gene."

(1)What can we learn from paragraph 2?

A.Kaavan is the heaviest elephant in the world.
B.Joint efforts have been made to rescue Kaavan.
C.Veterinarians tried to cure Kaavan of its diseases.
D.Experts helped Kaavan to adapt to his new home.
(2)Why did Kaavan leave Pakistan for Cambodia?

A.Because Cambodia had more experienced experts.
B.Because his living conditions went from bad to worse.
C.Because it served as the bond between the two countries.
D.Because the Pakistan zoo he stayed in was to shut down.
(3)Which of the following best explains "listless" underlined in paragraph 4?

    A.Depressed.
    B.Useless.
    C.Dependent.
    D.Missing.
(4)What will happen to Kaavan in the future?

    A.He will get freedom.
    B.He will be well trained.
C.He may live a long life.
D.He may have the next generation.

  • 12.Bacteria are a troublesome problem for astronauts. The microorganisms(微生物)from our bodies grow uncontrollably on surfaces of the International Space Station,so astronauts spend hours cleaning them up each week. How is NASA solving this very tiny big problem? It's turning to a group of high school kids. But not just any kids. It's depending on NASA HUNCH high school class, like the one science teachers Gene Gordon and Donna Himmelberg lead at Fairport High School in Fairport,New York.
HUNCH is designed to connect high school classrooms with NASA engineers. For the past two years,Gordon's students have been studying ways to kill bacteria in zero gravity, and they think they're close to a solution. "We don't give the students any breaks. They have to do it just like NASA engineers," says Florence Gold,a project manager. "There are no tests," Gordon says.
"There is no graded homework. There almost are no grades, other than 'Are you working towards your goal?' Basically,it's 'I've got to produce this product and then,at the end of year, present it to NASA.' Engineers come and really do an in-person review, and…it's not a very nice thing at time. It's a hard business review of your product."
Gordon says the HUNCH program has an influence on college admissions and practical life skills. "These kids are so absorbed in their studies that I just sit back.I don't teach." And that troublesome bacterium?Gordon says his students are emailing daily with NASA engineers about the problem, readying a workable solution to test in space.

    A.To strengthen teacher-student relationships.
    B.To develop students' communication skills.
C.To link space technology with school education.
D.To allow students to experience zero gravity.
(3)What do the NASA engineers do for the students in the program?

    A.Guide project designs.
    B.Check their product.
    C.Balance work schedules.
    D.Grade their homework.

    A.Space:The Final Homework Frontier.
    B.NASA:The Home of Astronauts.
    C.Nature:An Outdoor Classroom.

  • 13.Benjamin West, the father of American painting, showed his talent for art when he was only six years of age.But he did not know about brushes before a visitor told him he needed one.In those days,a brush was made from camel's hair. There were no camels nearby.Benjamin decided that cat hair would work instead. He cut some fur from the family cat to make a brush.

That year, one of Benjamin's cousins,Mr.Pennington, came to visit. He was impressed with Benjamin's drawings. When he went home,he sent Benjamin a box of paint and some brusjye.ais.He also sent six engravings (版畫)by an artist. These were the first pictures and first real paint and brushes Benjamin had ever seen.
In 1747,when Benjamin was nine years old,Mr.Pennington retured for another visit. He was amazed at what Benjamin had done with his gift.He asked Benjamin's parents if he might take the boy to Philadelphia for a visit.
In the city,Mr.Pennington gave Benjamin materials for creating oil paintings. The boy began a landscape (風(fēng)景) painting.Wiliam Wiliams,a well-known painter, came to see him work.Wiliams was impressed with Benjamin and gave him two classic books on painting to take home. The books were long and dull.Benjamin could read only a little, having been a poor student. But he later said,"Those two books were my companions by day,and under my pillow at night."While it is likely that he understood very little of the books, they were his introduction to classical paintings. The nine-year-old boy decided then that he would be an artist.

  • 14.ChatGPT,launched in November,2022,has attracted over 100 million monthly users in just two months, which is considered the fastest-growing consumer app. (1)
ChatGPT can write emails, computer code, even academic papers and poems. (2)
With various functions,it is suspected to do no good to multiple areas, above all the higher education.
So is ChatGPT a benefit or a trouble?
       (3)
Some universities have banned it due to the warning that it could prompt more students to cheat, especially in exams. (4)
Andreas Schleicher, director of education and skills of the Organization of Economic Co-operation and Development, for instance, said he welcomes ChatGPT because "it gives people a chance" to concentrate less on tasks that technology can perform equally well.
According to a survey covering more than 100 educators and over 1,000 students,one-third of the educators said they believe ChatGPT should be banned in schools and universities, while the rest supported students having access to it.The attitude of most students sees a distinct difference.(5)

As a result, the observed value and usefulness of ChatGPT seem to outweigh the risks. What we should focus on has shifted to better deal with the chatbot and its development.
A.They admitted having sought help from ChatGPT to complete their homework.
B.The worry is that ChatGPT could change the basic training structure of higher education.
C.By comparison, others regard it as a blessing rather than a curse.

There was a black kitten I nearly ignored. He was skinny and small and not even cute, but he stuck his paws through the cage, trying to play with me.He was clearly interested in me,so I asked to hug him.He curled up on my shoulder and began purring(發(fā)出咕嚕聲).Our connection was immediate.I adopted him, named him Adam, and brought him home.
Over the next 16 years,Adam and I were so close. He was gentle, sweet and playful. But one night last year, everything changed.
It was as if one day Adam was still acting like a kitten, and then the next day he was vomiting(嘔吐)all the time and no longer acting like his usual self. He'd lost weight and I knew that he was sick.I took him to the vet(獸醫(yī))and the diagnosis was sad:stomach cancer.Worse yet,the vet thought he was too old for operation. All I could do was give him medicine to help make him more comfortable.
A month later,Adam got worse.I took him to the emergency vet, where they kept him overnight to administer fluids(輸液).When I went to pick him up the next morning,on Christmas Eve,the vet said it was time to end his life.It was the best thing to do for him. With deep sorrow,I said goodbye to him.
Once I got back home, reality hurt me much.Usually,Adam was there to wait for me at the door. But he was gone, leaving an aching emptiness in my life and in my home.I suffered from huge pain.I told my husband I didn't want another cat.
