  • 1.Cows produce much methane (甲烷),the world's second worst greenhouse gas,as they break down the grass. They are a large source of the greenhouse gases that are driving climate change. Now scientists have shown the pollution from cows can be reduced by adding a little seaweed(海藻) to their food.
Recently, the researchers from the University of California studied 21 cows on a farm for about five months. They taught the cows to get their food from inside a special hood(罩),which allowed the scientists to know the amount of the methane the cows were giving off. They used a small amount of seaweed, which they mixed with the cows' food.
The results were surprisingly good.In some cases, the cows produced 82% less methane. The improvement depended on the kind of food the cows were given.Even the worst-polluting cows produced 33% less methane.Over the five months, the scientists didn't see any signs that the cows' stomachs were getting used to the seaweed and starting to produce more methane again. What's more, the cows that were fed seaweed gained just as much weight as the other cows.
But there are still some big problems with the idea of feeding cows seaweed. For one thing, there's not enough seaweed to feed all of the cows in the world. So farmers would have to figure out a way to grow lots of seaweed.A bigger problem is that for most of their lives, cows live in the fields, where they eat grass. That means there's no chance to feed them seaweed every day.
Still,it's very good news that something as simple as feeding cows seaweed can help reduce some of the pollution causing the climate crisis.
(1)Why did the researchers carry out the study?

    A.To improve the cows' welfare.
B.To test the effects of the seaweed.
C.To measure the amount of methane produced by cows.
D.To discover healthier grass to reduce the pollution from cows.
(2)What's the third paragraph mainly about?

    A.The results of the study.
    B.The process of the research.
    C.The content of the experiment.
    D.The information of the subjects.
(3)What is the biggest challenge in the researchers' opinion?

A.Seaweed is pretty rare in the world.
B.It's hard to mix seaweed with grass.
C.Cows fed with seaweed gained weight easily.
D.Cows can hardly have daily access to seaweed.
(4)What is the author's attitude towards the findings?

    A.Doubtful.
    B.Negative.
    C.Unclear.
    D.Positive.

  • 3.When was a kid, always used to wonder how in the world my father worked outside in the winter without a coat.It could be -20℃ and there'd be Dad,removing snow,or perhaps chopping some wood-his coat thrown aside-wearing a shirt, cap, and a pair of gloves.
"Aren't you cold,Dad?" I'd ask. "No," Dad would reply. "I'm not cold -working too hard to be cold."
Many times I wondered whether my father was an extremely tough man,or whether he was foolish.
One time when I was quite young, perhaps five or so,I went ice fishing with Dad.It was a bright, clear day and bitterly cold.
After we'd been out on the ice for a little while,my feet started getting cold.
"Daddy,my feet are cold," I said.
"Tell you what," he said."Walk around.Make some circles in the snow.See how many different patterns you can make. That will get your feet warm."
Now,I was just a little girl at the time but I remember thinking,"How in the world will walking around in the snow make my feet warm?Dad must be out of mind."
But he was my father, after all.I made circles in the snow.I made squares.Pretty soon I was having so much fun making patterns in the snow.I forgot about my feet being cold.
Now,all these years later,I know, too, from personal experience how my father was able to take his coat off and work outside in the winter wearing just a shirt,a cap and gloves.Because I do it,too."Aren't you cold?" my husband asked one winter day."No," I replied."I'm not cold-working too hard to be cold. "
I hope my husband has decided I'm both tough and smart. But I guess quite a bit of the time he thinks I'm foolish.
Wherever Dad is in that great big farm in the sky- I'm sure he can't help but smile whenever I take my coat off while I'm working outside in the winter.

  • 4.Some students get so nervous before a test. They do poorly even if they know the material.Sian Beilock,a professor at the University of Chicago in Illinois, has studied these highly anxious test-takers.The students start worrying about the results. And when we worry,it actually uses up attention and memory resources.
Professor Beilock and another researcher,Gerardo Ramirez, have developed a possible solution.Just before an exam, highly anxious test-takers spend ten minutes writing about their worries about the test.
The researchers tested the idea on a group of twenty anxious college students. They gave them two short math tests. After the first one, they asked the students to either sit quietly or write about their feelings about the upcoming second test.
Professor Beilock says those who sat quietly scored(得分)an average of 12% worse on the second test. But the students who had written about their fears improved their performance by an average of 5%.Next,the researchers used younger students in a biology class. They told them before final exams either to write about their feelings or to think about things unrelated(不相關(guān)的)to the test.Professor Beilock says highly anxious students who did the writing got an average grade of B+,compared to a B- for those who did not.
"What we showed is that for students who are highly test-anxious,who'd done our writing intervention(干預(yù)),all of a sudden there was no relationship between test fear and performance. They were performing just as well as their classmates who don't normally get nervous in these tests."
But what if students do not have a chance to write about their fears immediately before an exam?Professor Beilock says students can try it themselves at home or in the library and still improve their performance.

(1)What do the students start worrying about before an exam?

A.Whether they can pass the exams.
B.What other students do during the test.
C.Whether they have remembered the materials.
D.What kind of problems they will meet on the test paper.
(2)What is the solution developed by researchers?

A.Making the students focused on the test.
B.Asking the students to sit quietly before the test.
C.Having the students write about their worries about the test.
D.Asking the students to direct the attention away from the test.
(3)According to Professor Beilock, those who thought about things unrelated to the test
    .
A.became less nervous before the test
B.were better at controlling their feelings
C.did worse than those who wrote about their feelings
D.did better than those who wrote about their feelings
(4)We can infer from the last paragraph that
    .
A.writing about our worries before an exam can work a bit
B.we can only write about our worries right before an exam
C.the best place to write about our worries is in the test room
D.it doesn't matter where we write about our worries before an exam

  • 5.Community Service Nowadays high schools are faced with a very controversial issue whether or not community service hours are needed to graduate.High schools are arguing that 40 hours of community service are needed to graduate, but many upset students are voicing protests(反對) to this demand.
Supporters of the community service project argue that while high school students are participating in community service, they will become better aware of what the real world is like.Students will learn valuable life lesson by doing community service.(1)
.They feel that if high school students are forced to do community service they will begin to see it as a punishment and as something that they have to do because it is required instead of something that they want to do.Students will in the future look back at the community service projects that they were forced to do throughout high school.(2)

Another idea that the protestors give about this community service issue is time restriction. When a student goes to school full time,he is involved in after-class activities and also works.(3)
.Supporters argue back that high school students only need to fulfill 40 hours of community service throughout 4 years. If students well manage their time and start the community service in their first year in high school, all they need to do is an hour every other week.
       (4)
.The protestors argue that high school students do not have their driver's license,so how are they expected to get to their community service site when their parents or friends are at work or just too busy to give them a ride.(5)
.The supporters argue that students can find community service projects close to home or if they live in the country find another student to car pool with.
In my opinion, community service is a wonderful thing that everyone should be required to do at some point in their life, but are high school students mature and responsible enough to take on community service projects at this stage in their life?

A.Protestors have struck back with a very solid argument.
B.A final controversial issue that appears is transportation.
C.Students will feel good about themselves for helping others in need.
D.They will continue to carry a negative attitude towards community service for their lifetime.
E.Both sides have solid arguments about why community service should or should not be forced upon students.
F.Unless the school offers a means of transportation for the students there really is no solution to this problem.
G.The time that is needed to participate in a community service project may place quite a burden on the student.

  • 8.No Time With a broad smile on her lips,15-year old Sirin rushed to her mom to show off her new painting. But mom raised her eyebrows with eyes wide open, and spoke in an impatient tone, "No time, baby.Right now I am busy with an important talk.Just wait for some time,OK?"
Holding her oil painting, she frowned (皺眉),and then searched for her dad.
"Dad,see what I have done," Sirin announced aloud in a thrilling voice. Her dad turned around while adjusting his tie, grinned at her,and showed his thumbs up!
Immediately, blowing her two cheeks,Sirin replied angrily, "Dad,you haven't seen it yet."
He smiled at her saying, "No time, baby.I will see it later." He just patted her back lovingly, kissed her forehead, and rushed for his office.
She was not a kid to be pleased with simple gesture or smile. She stood there for a few seconds, and then stormed off to her own bedroom.Hot air was blowing from her nostrils (鼻孔);her face turned into apple red.She threw the painting on the table, slammed (把……砰地關(guān)上) the door and threw herself on her bed.
"Why is everybody so busy?" She recalled thousands of incidents that hurt her in pre-school,middle school and even in high school too!She assumed at least her own family members would give some values to her thoughts, but they were no exception.Unconsciously, her eyes were filled with tears.
The knocking sound on the door put a sudden brake to her thought. Her mom was calling her for dinner.Sirin came late to join them on purpose. She kept silent and didn't look at anyone, scratching(刮) the table mat with her nail. Her mom was puzzled at the unusual behavior.Suddenly, the morning incident clicked in her mind.Softly, she asked, "Honey, did I do anything wrong?"
Para 1:At this very moment,Sirin could no longer resist her anger.

Para 2:When back from school the next day,Sirin was surprised to see her beautifully-decorated painting on thewall.
