12.There is a curious love triangle that sits at the center of the new documentary Fire of Love. It's between a man,a woman and a volcano.Well, all of them are volcanoes.
Their names might not be especially well-known today, but in the 1970s and '80s,F(xiàn)rench scientists Katia Krafft and Maurice Krafft were very famous for their photographs and writings about the volcanoes. When they died in 1991 on Mount Unzen in Japan, their deaths were covered globally. But their story has somewhat faded in the public memory in the past three decades, though Werner Herzog did spotlight therm in his 2016 documentary Into the Inferno.
The Kraffts, who first bonded over Mount Etna and Mount Stromboli and were married in 1970,witnessed about 140 eruptions on every continent except Antarctica and won an Emrny for their National Geographic documentary Mountains of Fire. They would famously drop everything to get to an active volcano, and were often the first on site. They were also known for their willingness to get dangerously close.
Filmrnaker Sara Dosa once met the Kraffts while making an earlier film about Iceland many years ago.In 2020,with the help of ImageEst,a French museum, and Maurice Krafft's brother,Bertrand Krafft,Dosa and her team were able to get access to over 180 hours of footage shot by the Kraffts. So Dosa decided to make something about the Kraffts in the true spirit of the Kraffts.
"We wanted to let them play themselves. We see them as the authors of their own story," Dosa said. "This is a co-creation,shot by them and starring them. We're just stringing together the pieces of their life for the audience to connect with."
However,F(xiàn)ire of Love is anything but a filmed Wikipedia(維基百科)page.Dosa and her team have drawn on the techniques of French New Wave films to help shape the style of their film, including playful multiple screens.
(1)Where did Katia Krafft and Maurice Krafft pass away?
A.On Mount Etna.
B.On Mount Strotnboli.
C.On Mount Unzen.
D.On Mount Krakatoa.
(2)Why were the Kraffts considered as volcanoes?

(3)Who directed the film Fire of Love?
A.Bertrand Krafft.
B.Sara Dosa.

13.My brother Jack, and I have many hobbies in common. We watch videos on YouTube. We go swimming or run round outside.Jack makes me laugh really hard. He's so much smarter than any other student I know. But most kids never find out how funny, kind and wise Jack is.That's because most kids don't get to know Jack at all.He doesn't get invited to birthday parties. He doesn't get picked first in gym class.
Jack has a disability. He walks with braces on his legs.Jack also doesn't have as much social awareness as other kids at his age. That weans it can be hard for him to understand what other people are thinking and feeling.Sometimes he makes sudden sounds and talks too much. But he doesn't mean to take over the conversation.Usually he's just really excited and doesn't want to lose other kids' attention.
When Jack was born, doctors said he might never walk, talk,or swallow. He has worked so hard to be able to do these things. From the time he was a baby,he has had many surgeries. Now he goes to about nine different appointments each week.He does stretches every day before he puts on his braces. He also does a really cool bath treatment. It helps improve his speech and movement. Now he's even able to help with chores. As his sister,I am so proud of all that Jack has achieved.
But I am also grateful for all that Jack's challenges have taught our family. We always support each other and have learned to have compassion for others and it is this kind of sympathy that leads me to help others.

14. Losing your ability to think and remember is pretty scary. We know the risk of dementia (癡呆) increases with age.But if you have memory slips, you probably needn't worry. There are pretty clear differences between signs of dementia and age-related memory loss.
After age 50,it's quite common to have trouble remembering the names of people, places and thing quickly, says Dr.Smith of Brigham and Woman's Hospital in Boston.
The brain ages just like the rest of the body.Certain parts shrink (萎縮),especially areas in the brain that are important to learning, memory and planning.Changes in brain cells can affect communication between different regions of the brain. And blood flow can be reduced as blood vessels (血管) narrow.
Forgetting the name of an actor in a favorite movie, for example,is nothing to worry about. But if you forget the plot of the movie or don't re member even seeing it,that's far more concerning,Smith says.
When you forget entire experiences,he says, that's "a red flag that something more serious may be involved." Forgetting how to operate a familiar object like a microwave oven,or forgetting how to drive to the house of a friend you've visited many times before can also be signs of something going wrong.
But even then,Dr.Smith says, people shouldn't panic. There are many things that can cause confusion and memory loss, including health problems like temporary stoppage of breathing during sleep, high blood pressure,or depression,as well as medications like antidepressants.
You don't have to figure this out on your own.Dr.Smith suggests going to your doctor to check on medications, health problems and other issues that could be affecting memory. And the best defense against memory loss is to try to prevent it by building up your brain's cognitive (認(rèn)知的) reserve,Dr.Smith says.
"Read books,go to movies, take on new hobbies or activities that force one to think in novel ways," he says.In other words, keep your brain busy and working. And also get physically active, because exercise is a known brain booster (助推器).
(1)Why is it common for the aged to experience memory loss?
A.The related parts of brain get aged and smaller.
B.The communication of brain regions is stopped.
C.The brain cells of memory change their positions.
D.The slow blood flows result in narrow blood vessels.
(2)What can we do to fight against the memory loss?
A.Check health problems in the hospital.
B.Take medicine to regain your brain cells.
C.Take part in physical and mental activities.
D.Build up a completely new cognitive region.
(3)Which of the situation warns us to see a doctor?
A.John doesn't know how to operate a new printer.
B.Anne has forgotten her usual way to the park near home.
C.Jack can't remember the name of an actor in a soup opera.
D.Amy is confused with her friends' addresses occasionally.
(4)What is the best title of the text?
A.What Causes Memory Loss
B.Have You Lost Thinking Ability
C.How Does Brain Booster Work
D.Have You Really Got Dementia組卷:15引用:3難度:0.5

15.At one point or another, you've probably heard someone speak with confidence on a topic that they actually know almost nothing about. This phenomenon is known as the Dunning-Kruger effect, which refers to the finding that people who are relatively unskilled or unknowledgeable in a particular subject sometimes tend to overestimate their knowledge and abilities.
In a set of studies, researchers Justin Kruger and David Dunning asked participants to complete tests of their skills in a particular field. Then, participants were asked to guess how well they had done on the test.(1)
David Dunning explains that "the knowledge and intelligence that are required to be good at a task are often the same qualities needed to recognize that one is not good at that task." In other words,if someone knows very little about a particular topic, they may not even know enough about the topic to realize that their knowledge is limited.Importantly, someone may be highly skilled in one area, but be influenced by the Dunning-Kruger effect in another field.(2)
If people who know very little about a topic think they're experts, what do experts think of themselves?Interestingly,Dunning and Kruger found that although experts typically guessed their performance was above average, they didn't realize quite how well they had done. They often make a different mistake:(3)
What can people do to overcome the effect?Dunning and Kruger once had some of the participants take a logic test and then complete a short training session on logical reasoning. After the training, the participants were asked to assess how they'd done on the previous test.(4)
Afterward, the participants who scored in the bottom 25 percent lowered their estimate of how well they thought they had done on the initial test.In other words, one way to overcome the effect may be to learn more about a topic.
The Dunning-Kruger effect suggests that we may not always know as much as we think we do.(5)
A.Researchers found that the training made a difference.
B.They assume that everyone else is knowledgeable, too.
C.This happens when people don't know much about a topic.
D.All of them had a more accurate view of their performance.
E.They found that participants tended to overestimate their abilities.
F.This means that everyone can potentially be affected by the Dunning-Kruger effect.
G.In some areas,we may not know enough about a topic to realize that we are unskilled.組卷:1引用:1難度:0.5

Dear editor,
Recently students of our school have made the survey of"Views on Newspapers".The people interviewed held two different opinions.45% of them enjoy reading newspapers.First of all,as a convenient source of information, reading newspapers is not limited by time.Additional, reading also makes people to think, which helps develop people's intelligence. Moreover, people can read whatever section they are interested.
However,55% of the people don't turn to newspapers for many information. They hold the idea that newspapers don't catch people eye because they lack the sound and video what make other sources of information more exciting. What's more, readers receive information from newspapers late than from the internet and TV.
Personally, people can make use of whatever means to gather information as long as it's convenient for us.
Yours,
