1.Evidence of a worm-like creature about the size of a grain of rice has been uncovered in South Australia, and researchers believe it is the oldest ancestor on the family tree that includes humans and most animals. The creature lived about 535 million years ago. It is considered to be an evolutionary step forward for early life on Earth.
Researchers have been trying to find evidence of the common ancestor of most animals.Developing its body structure and organization successfully allowed life to move in specific, purposeful directions. This includes everything from worms and dinosaurs to amphibians(兩棲動物)and humans. But for our common ancestor, they knew that fossils (化石) of the tiny ,simple creatures they imagined would be nearly impossible to find because of its size and soft body. Then, they turned to fossilized burrows(洞穴),dated to the Ediacaran Period, found in South Australia.
For 15 years, scientists knew the burrows were created by the creature. There was no evidence of what made the burrows and lived in them until researchers decided to take a closer look at the burrows.Geology professor Mary Droser spotted impressions shaped like ovals (橢圓形) near the burrows.
A 3-D laser scan revealed the impressions containing evidence of a body shaped and sized like a rice grain, with a noticeable head and tail which suggested it had muscles. The muscles would have enabled the creature to move and create the burrows, like the way a worm moves. And the size of the creature matched with the size of the burrows they found.
The researchers involved in the study named the creature Ikaria wariootia. The first name translates as "meeting place" in the Adnyamathanha language.Adnyamathanha is the name of Australian people that live in the area where the fossil was found.

2.The World Health Organization (WHO) recently said that it planned to add gaming disorder(游戲障礙)to its new list of disease classifications, angering the gaming industry but pleasing doctors who hope it may make treatment more easily available.
Some US experts said it would make little difference when it comes to helping people with the disorder, although others said it would bring attention to a disorder that people sometimes don't recognize.
Many of us enjoy video games, but does playing our favorite game for a couple of hours every night mean we're suffering from gaming disorder? No,according to the WHO.
The symptoms(癥狀)listed by the WHO include a lack of control over gaming, treating gaming more seriously than other life interests and daily activities, and continuing to play games despite the negative consequences that playing them might have.
"The behavior pattern is enough to result in large damage to one's personal, family,or social life." the WHO said.
Meanwhile,Douglas Gentile of low State University has carried out influential research into the cause of gaming addiction in young people.
"I and many others had assumed that gaming is not really a problem but is a symptom of other problems," he told NBC News. Many had thought it was simply a failure of self-control.
To see if it was,Gentile's team studied a group of children who had been gaming for several years. "We found that when kids became addicted, their anxiety increased and their grades decreased," Gentile said. When kids were able to back off from gaming, their symptoms disappeared,he added.
Gentile thinks medical organizations should pay attention to the WHO's suggestion.
"This isn't an issue of opinion;it's an issue of science," he said.
"This is a major scientific and medical organization. They don't do things lightly and without reason.
Dr Petros Levounis, chair of psychiatry(精神病學(xué))at the New Jersey Medical School at Rutgers University, said that he hoped the WHO's suggestion would lead to more research into obsessive(過度的)behavior among all types of people.
(1)Which of the following is a sign of gaming disorder according to the WHO?
A.Putting games before everything else.
B.Playing games for several hours every night.
C.Having no hobbies but playing games.
D.Keeping playing until winning the games.
(2)Why is Gentile's research mentioned?
A.To explain the symptoms of gaming addiction.
B.To show the impact of gaming disorder.
C.To show the reasons behind the WHO's decision.
D.To introduce the study that influenced the WHO's proposal.
(3)What did Levounis think of the WHO's decision?
A.It needed further research to make it more convincing.
B.It would do little to help people with gaming addiction.
C.It would encourage new cures for gaming disorder.
D.It would encourage studies about diseases similar to gaming disorder.
(4)What's the article mainly about?
A.The WHO explaining what gaming disorder is.
B.New research findings about gaming disorder.
C.The benefits of defining gaming as a disease.
D.The discussions about defining gaming disorder as a disease.組卷:1引用:1難度:0.6 -
3.Jonathan Agnew recently described "unofficial interviews" as those where you agree that it's "between you and I".And a Times journalist wrote about someone who had "made Jenny and I feel so welcome".They are both intelligent people with the ability to express ideas fluently and logically. And yet they wrote "I" where they meant "me".
It's happening more and more.We are scared of the mistake like "Terry and me went to the pub".We've all been taught that it should be "Terry and I went to the pub".Plus we've heard the Queen say "my husband and I" a lot.So we begin to use "and I" even when it should be "and me".
But my point here is not to support the correct usage. It's the opposite:I want to reject the idea that there's such a thing as "correct" English at all.Language isn't like maths, where you can show that two plus two is four.Language has no fundamental rights and wrongs, only conventions. You cannot definitively prove that any are "right" and others "wrong".
Sometimes correct language sounds absurd.Look at Ofsted (Office for Standards in Education,Children's Services and Skills) who came up with a new rule.Primary school children now have to be taught that "inverted commas" is right, while "speech marks" is wrong. You and I know that those terms are interchangeable. And the child who looks at those marks on the page can see that both make perfect sense. That's because a primary school child is more intelligent than the Ofsted turkey who came up with this rule.
As the teacher who told me about the ludicrous rule pointed out, there is no doubt that in a few years' time, the "incorrect" term will become the "correct" one.But the truly horrible thing about an education system like this is that it destroys children's love of language. It tells them they have to worry about rules, instead of encouraging them to read and write for its own sake.Let them read for fun and they'll absorb the rules — or conventions — anyway.Have them shaking in fear about English tests, and you'll increase their insecurity about getting language "right".
Then one day that insecurity will have them saying "and I" even though they mean "and me".
(1)Why do people use "and I" when it should be "and me" according to the text?
A.The Ofsted sets a rule.
B. "and I" is the correct English.
C.The Queen makes a similar mistake.
D.People feel insecure about using "and me".
(2)What can we learn from paragraphs 3 and 4?
A.Rules benefit children's language learning.
B.Language learning is more complicated than maths.
C.Language is based on commonly accepted rules.
D.A primary school child is smarter than the Ofsted.
(3)What does the underlined word "ludicrous" in Paragraph 5 mean?
A.Influential.
B.Particular.
C.Conventional.
D.Ridiculous.
(4)Which of the following best describes the author's attitude towards the correct English?
A.Critical.
B.Objective.
C.Favorable.
D.Indifferent.組卷:0引用:1難度:0.6

7.閱讀下面短文,根據(jù)其內(nèi)容寫一篇60詞左右的內(nèi)容概要。
A trained Search and Rescue (SAR) dog can help us locate victims of natural disasters, accidents and crime. So,do you want to train your dog for search and rescue work?A dog that is friendly and approachable makes for a fantastic search dog. While it is true that training a puppy(小狗)is definitely easier,it doesn't mean that training a grown dog is a lost cause.Puppies need to interact with several humans of all ages as much as possible,so that they become more approachable.
Take your dog out on regular walks in the park, make him run and sweat regularly.SAR dogs are required to be good at swimming, hiking and walking in various areas that aren't safe.Ideally, this dog needs to be exposed to all the elements of nature so that the conditions during an actual task don't take him by surprise.
An average dog can hear sounds between frequencies ranging from 40 Hz(赫茲)to 60 kHz,which is really sharp.A SAR dog,on several occasions, needs to take helicopter, snowmobile or speed boat rides, which can be really noisy for their sensitive ears.Dogs that are used to harsh sounds perform well under any circumstances, and those sharp ears always come in handy to locate sounds that even humans can't hear.
Following a scent(氣味)is a quality that comes naturally to all dogs.To train your dog to follow the scent, you'll need a piece of cloth and three or four small buckets(桶).The buckets should be placed close to each other in the upside down position. Then, take the piece of cloth and let the dog smell it.This piece of cloth should be taken away from the dog and placed under one of the buckets.
Allow the dog to smell your clothing and secretly hide in another room.Let another person command the dog to find you. When the dog has found you successfully,a reward in the form of a treat should follow. As your training advances, you must repeat this exercise using different people, and on different outdoor locations, under varied weather conditions and at different time of the day.組卷:9引用:1難度:0.4
