  • 17.Jo?o Carlos Martins, the 80-year-old Brazilian classical pianist, had lost the ability to play for almost 20 years due to a series of unfortunate events in his life. But everything changed thanks to a pair of special bionic (仿生的) gloves.
He is one of the best pianists alive today. He had already won a contest playing Bach when he was only 8 years old. Then at the peak of his skills,he could play 21 notes per second. However, luck wasn't always on his side.At 24 years old,he suffered an accident that caused nerve damage to his arm, atrophying (使萎縮) three of his fingers. Then when he was 55,an accidental brain injury completely paralyzed (使癱瘓) his arm.
Jo?o went through 24 surgeries, but nothing could help his hands, forcing him to stop playing the piano, seemingly for good.
However,Jo?o didn't give up on his musical career. He became a conductor in 2003.He couldn't turn the pages in the score,so instead,he just tried his best to memorize every score, note by note.He still played the piano sometimes, but extremely slow, since he could play only one note per second.
That might have been his life, were it not for an engineer who saw the pianist playing live and decided to work out something to help him. After a concert,he approached Jo?o with the first pair of special bionic gloves.Yet,they didn't work. When the engineer first showed Jo?o the gloves,he joked that they were for boxing, not to play the piano.
But neither of them gave up,and after testing out several models, the perfect match was created. The gloves provide the necessary support for each finger and can even "tune" to what he plays.
Jo?o knows that he might never recover his speed of the past. But he's starting over,as though he were an 8-year-old again.Jo?o says,it can take years, but he will keep pushing. He won't give up.

(1)What can we learn about Jo?o Carlos Martins from the second paragraph?

A.He lost three fingers during an accident.
B.He showed great talent for the piano as a child.
C.He went through many hardships to succeed.
D.He suffered brain injuries when he was young.
(2)What did Jo?o do after a series of misfortunes?

    A.He asked engineers for help.
B.He lost hope for his future life.
C.He prepared to give up his dream.
D.He struggled to continue his career.
(3)What did Jo?o think of the first pair of special bionic gloves?

    A.They should be improved.
    B.They cost too much money.
C.They were too heavy to carry.
D.They could bring fun to his life.
(4)Which of the following can best describe Jo?o Carlos Martins?

    A.Smart and helpful.
    B.Gifted and confident.
    C.Determined and positive.
    D.Creative and generous.

  • 18.Tomatoes were first planted in 700 AD by Aztecs and Incas.Explorers returning from Mexico introduced the tomato into Europe, where it was first mentioned in 1556.The French called it "the apple of love",the Germans "the apple of paradise(樂園)".
Tomatoes are rich in vitamins A and C and fiber, and are cholesterol(膽固醇)free. An average size tomato (148 grams or so) has only 35 calories.Furthermore, new medical research suggests that the consumption of lycopene(番茄紅素),the stuff that makes tomatoes red,may prevent cancer.Besides, the fruit now appears to have two more health giving benefits.Protection against sunburn and helping keep the skin looking youthful are the latest pluses,a study has found.
Professor Mark Birch-Machin said tomatoes could provide a cheap and easy way of improving health.Researchers at Manchester and Newcastle universities recommend two tomato-based meals a day for health.Possible menus include a glass of tomato juice with breakfast and a salad later or tomato soup for lunch and pasta(意大利面)with a tomato sauce for dinner.
To test the fruit's ability to protect the skin, ten volunteers were asked to eat five tablespoons of tomato paste mixed with olive oil every day for three months.Another ten had a daily dose of olive oil-minus the tomato paste. The tests showed the tomato-eaters were a third better protected against sunburn at the end of the study than at the start, the British Society for Investigative Dermatology's annual conference heard.
The researchers stressed, however, that their findings were not an excuse to throw away the sun cream.Professor Lesley Rhodes,a Manchester University dermatologist, said: "People should not think tomatoes in any way can replace sun creams but they may be a good additive."

(1)Why does the writer talk about the history of tomatoes in Paragraph 1?

    A.To lead in the topic.
    B.To raise a concern.
    C.To introduce a question.
    D.To make a statement.

    B.The benefits of tomatoes.
    C.The latest findings of tomatoes.

(3)What is the best way to keep the skin looking youthful?

    A.Eating more tomatoes.
    B.Using more sun cream.
C.Staying inside as often as possible.
D.Using sun cream and eating tomatoes.
(4)How do the researchers test tomatoes' ability to protect the skin against sunburn?

    A.By giving an example.
    B.By setting up a database.
    C.By making a comparison.
    D.By analyzing possible reasons.

  • 20.Angus,Doris,Gabriel and Kamil are some of the 21 names that have been chosen to be given to storms in the UK in the 2016/17 season.
The Met Office, the UK's national weather service, decided to give storms boys' and girls' names in 2015 in the same way as they did in America.
The Met Office hopes that naming big storms will mean people are more aware (意識到) of them and how dangerous they can be.Derrick Ryall, from the Met Office, said, "We have seen how naming storms elsewhere in the world raises people's awareness of storms before they break."
In the past, the same UK storm could be given different names by different organizations. "We noticed that many organizations during the last couple of winters, when we have had bad storms, started giving names to them.Think back to the St Jude's Day storm in 2013,and the socalled Hurricane Bawbag in Scotland in 2011.But it led to confusion (混亂)," a Met Office spokeswoman said.
According to the Met Office, there is a name for each letter of the whole alphabet (字母表),except for Q,U,X,Y and Z.That is the same as the naming tradition used in America. And not all storms will be big enough to get names - only those expected to cause great damage.
If there are more than 21 storms in a year, the Met Office will start again with another name beginning with "A".However, according to Met Office spokeswoman Lindsay Mears, "It's unlikely we would get through the whole alphabet in one season. We had 14 storms in the very bad winter of 2013/14,and if the naming system had been in operation then we wouldn't have used the whole alphabet."

(1)Why are storms in the UK named?

A.To increase public awareness of them.
B.To remind people of their short stay.
C.To follow what other countries did.
D.To meet the needs of its people.
(2)Examples are given in Paragraph 4 to show

A.there're many storms to name in a year
    B.organizations named storms differently
C.some storms' names are similar to others'
D.some storms' names are hard to understand
(3)What do we know about the names given to storms?

A.Storms will be given names whatever their sizes.
B.Serious storms will be given boy's names.
C.21 letters will be used to begin the names.
D.21 names will be given at most in a year.
(4)What can be learned from Lindsay Mears?

A.There are not too many big storms yearly.
B.Action will be taken to prevent storms.
C.There are usually 14 storms in a year.
D.The naming system will not change.
