1.There is an old joke among pilots that says the ideal flight crew is a computer,a pilot and a dog.The computer's job is to fly the plane. The pilot is there to feed the dog.And the dog's job is to bite the pilot if he tries to touch the computer.
Handing complex tasks to computers is not new.But recent progress in machine learning,a subfield of artificial intelligence (AI),has enabled computers to handle many problems which were previously beyond jye.aim.The result has been an AI boom, with computers moving into everything from medical diagnosis and insurance to self-driving cars.
There is a problem, though.Machine learning works by giving computers the ability to train themselves, which adapts their programming to the task at hand.People struggle to understand exactly how those self-written programs do what they do.When algorithms(計算機(jī)程序)are doing small tasks, such as playing chess or recommending a film to watch, this "black box" problem can be safely ignored. When they are deciding who gets a loan,or how to drive a car through a crowded city,it is potentially harmful. And when things go wrong, then customers, regulators and the courts will want to know why.
For some people this is a reason to hold back AL France's digital-economy minister,Mounir Mahjoubi, has said that the government should not use any algorithm whose decisions cannot be explained. But that is an overreaction. The difficulties caused by clever computers are not unheard- of.Society already has plenty of experience dealing with problematic black boxes;the most common are called human beings, who can't even figure out what's going on in a brajye.ai.In response to the weakness in humans, society has evolved a series of workable coping mechanisms, called laws, rules and regulations. Many of these can be applied to machines as well.
Humans have worked with computers on complex tasks for decades. One lesson from such applications is that, wherever possible, people should supervise(監(jiān)督)the machjye.aies.In that joke, pilots are vital in case something happens that is beyond the scope of artificial intelligence. As computers spread, companies and governments should ensure the first line of defence is a real person who can overrule the algorithms if necessary.
(1)Why is the joke mentioned in Paragraph 1?
A.To make people laugh.
B.To foresee future aeroplane industry.
C.To introduce the latest model of aeroplanes.
D.To raise people's awareness of computers performing complex tasks.
(2)What has caused the increasing application of computers in various fields?
A.The shortage of labor force.
B.The rise of artificial intelligence.
C.The encouragement of government.
D.The development of medical economy.
(3)Why are some people opposed to AI?
A.Black boxes always go wrong.
B.Laws forbid machine learning.
C.They don't understand how AI works.
D.Computers are trying to replace human beings.組卷:9引用:1難度:0.6 -
2.How good are you at maths? Some people love the challenge of algebra(代數(shù))or enjoy working out number puzzles.Maths is all around us,from working out how to share the bill after a meal,to calculating your family bills. But many are afraid of the moment when they have to deal with numbers and figures and feel a real sense of worry and confusion. It can seem frightening, but this maths anxiety is perfectly normal, and you're definitely not alone. And anyway, our worries and fears don't necessarily reflect our ability.
The problem really starts in childhood,at school.Research has found that maths teachers who are nervous about teaching the subject can pass on their anxiety to the pupils, and girls may be more likely to be affected. The Programme for International Student Assessment found around 31% of 15—and 16—year—olds across 34 countries said they got very nervous doing maths problems,33% said they got tense doing maths homework, and nearly 60% said they worried that maths classes would be difficult.Shulamit Kahn,a professor from Boston University, believes that giving students, particularly girls, good role models is critical, especially at a young age.She thinks the key is to get people, especially women who love maths,to teach younger children
Writing for the BBC,David Robson says, "It's not clear why maths causes so much fear compared to geography. But the fact that there's no room for playing tricks might make you more worried about underperforming." And once we assume that we're not a maths person,we avoid solving things that we probably could do.
Psychologists have been trying to work out why mental arithmetic(心算)can bring us out in a sweat. That seed of fear may come from many sources, but some suggest that voicing your fears can loosen their control over you. They also suggest encouraging children to see a maths test as a challenge, not a threat. Most importantly,we need to think positively about maths and give it a second chance.
(1)What is the author's understanding of maths anxiety in paragraph 1?
A.It happens when you have to pay bills after a meal.
B.It actually reflects one's poor performance in maths.
C.Only students often suffer from this sense of worry.
D.People normally have it when dealing with numbers.
(2)What may cause students' maths anxiety according to the research?
A.The particular feature of maths.
B.The fear of failure in maths tests.
C.Students' dislike of learning maths.
D.Maths teachers' lack of confidence.
(3)What can we infer from David Robson's words?
A.Geography seldom causes worry.
B.Slow students have maths anxiety.
C.Dishonesty is difficult in maths tests.
D.Maths students like number puzzles.
(4)What is the best way to get over maths anxiety?
A.Speaking out your fears in public.
B.Employing female maths teachers.
C.Having a positive attitude to maths.
D.Viewing maths tests as a challenge.組卷:32引用:7難度:0.5 -
3.The government's top Great Barrier Reef scientist says a third mass coral bleaching(珊瑚白化)event in five years is a clear signal that the marine wonder is "calling for urgent help on climate change".Corals can recover from mild bleaching, but severe bleaching can kill corals.
Prof Terry Hughes, director of the Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies at James Cook University, surveyed 1,036 reefs from a plane over nine days in late March.
The marine park authority also had an observer on the flights. The survey has released maps showing that serious levels of bleaching occurred in 2020 in all three sections of the reef northern, central and southern. Some 25% of the reefs were seriously bleached-meaning that more than 60% of the corals on each reef had bleached.
The Great Barrier Reel has experienced five mass bleaching events-1998.2002,2016,2017 and 2020 -all caused by rising ocean temperatures driven by global heating.Hughes said there probably would not be the same level of coral death in the north and central regions in 2020 as in previous years, but this was partly because previous bleaching outbreaks had kill off the less heat -tolerant species The 2020 bleaching was second only to 2016 for severity(嚴(yán)重性),Hughes said.
Dr.David Wachenfeld, chief scientist at the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority told Guardian Australia, "My greatest fear is that people will lose hope for the reef.Without hope there's no action.People need to see these bleaching events. They are clear signals that the Great Barrier Reef is calling for urgent help and for us to do everything we can".
Measures to improve the ability of recovery of the reef include improving water quality, controlling outbreaks of coral-eating starfish, and research and development to improve the heat tolerance of corals. "However, climate change brings a new scale of impact unlike anything we have seen before. Thus, dealing with the climate problem is the basis for everything else to work, " Wachenfeld said.
(1)What does the underlined word "mild" in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A.Serious.
B.Strong.
C.Steady.
D.Slight.
(2)What can we learn from Paragraphs 2 & 3?
A.The majority of the corals on each reef were bleached.
B.The survey was carried out on a plane by Hughes alone.
C.The 2020 bleaching killed off the less heat tolerant species.
D.The 2020 bleaching was worse than those of all the previous years.
(3)We can infer from Wachenfeld's words that people seeing the bleaching events
A.have done everything they can for the reef
B.a(chǎn)re sure to lose hope for the reef
C.will care more about the reef
D.will have no action at all
(4)Which is the essential measure to improve the ability of recovery of the reef?
A.Improving water quality.
B.Making efforts to prevent global warming.
C.controlling outbreaks of coral-eating starfish.
D.Doing research on the heat tolerance of corals.組卷:27引用:2難度:0.5 -

I live in a small but lovely neighborhood. Our house is neither large nor luxurious, but it has a fairly big garden. My father loves his garden. He planted some seeds in it and took good care of the plants, watering them, applying fertilizer, weeding and getting rid of bugs.He was never tired of doing all that stuff. But at that time,I didn't understand why working in the dirt excited him so much.
Unfortunately,in the summer vacation before senior high school,my father was seriously injured in an accident. He had to stay in bed for a while. My mother had several business trips,so she couldn't take care of the garden.I didn't want my father to worry.I said that I would take care of his garden until he recovered.I assumed that the little plants would continue to grow as long as they had water, and luckily it rained fairly often,so I didn't think much about the garden.
One Saturday morning,my father said to me, "Christine, the vegetables should be about ready to be picked.Let's have a salad today!" I went out to the garden and was upset to see that many of the lettuce (生菜) leaves and carrots had been half eaten by bugs. There were hundreds of bugs all over them!
I panicked for a moment but then I quietly went to the nearest supermarket to buy some vegetables. When I was making the salad,my mother came home and saw the bag from the supermarket in the kitchen.I was embarrassed and admitted, "Dad would like a salad, but the garden is a disaster.I don't want to disappoint him,so I went to the store and bought some vegetables." My mother smiled, saying, "Honey, you know what is the right thing to do."
My father seemed very pleased when I took the salad to him.______
Feeling guilty,I decided to do the right thing.______組卷:54引用:7難度:0.5
