Trampolines are great for both fun and exercise, but they are a fairly recent jye.aivention.In the 1930s,George Nissen was inspired to make a bouncy "net" after seeing a circus performance. He thought it more entertaining for performers to continue bouncing instead of landing in a net. So,at the age of 16,he made it by stretching thick cloth in a metal frame.
The Popsicle
Cold weather led to the creation of a delicious invention- the Popsicle.Frank Epperson was just 11 years old when he accidentally created his first Popsicle. He was making himself a soda drink and left his glass outside overnight. When he found it in the morning,it had frozen solid with the stir (攪拌)stick still in the glass. And the first Popsicle was born.
Braille
Three-year-old Louis Braille experienced a serious eye injury that blinded him in both eyes.He struggled to read by moving his fingers across raised letters, but that proved very difficult. At the age of twelve,Louis learned about a communication system where messages could be read silently with fingertips. He changed it and created Braille. It' s now used around the world!
BEACON
When Hannah Herbst was just 14 years old,she was named America's Top Young Scientist for inventing a device called BEACON.After receiving a letter from her Ethiopian pen pal,Hannah was inspired to create a device that could convert the energy from ocean waves into electricity which she hopes will help people without easy access to electricity.

12.You've heard that plastic is polluting the ocean—between 4.8 and 12.7 million tonnes enter ocean ecosystems every year. But does one plastic straw or cup really make a difference?Artist Benjamin Von Wong wants you to know that it does.He builds massive sculptures out of plastic garbage, forcing viewers to re-examine their relationship to single-use plastic products.
At the beginning of the year, the artist built a piece called "Strawpocalypse," a pair of 10-foot-tall plastic waves, frozen mid-crash.Made of 168,000 plastic straws collected from several volunteer beach cleanups, the sculpture made its first appearance at the Estella Place shopping center in Ho Chi Minh City,Vietnam.
Just 9% of global plastic waste is recycled.Plastic straws are by no means the biggest source(來源)of plastic pollution, but they've recently come under fire because most people don't need them to drink with and, because of their small size and weight, they cannot be recycled.Every straw that's part of Von Wong's artwork likely came from a drink that someone used for only a few minutes.Once the drink is gone, the straw will take centuries to disappear.
In a piece from 2018,Von Wong wanted to illustrate(說明)a specific statistic:Every 60 seconds,a truckload's worth of plastic enters the ocean. For this work, titled "Truckload of Plastic," Von Wong and a group of volunteers collected more than 10,000 pieces of plastic, which were then tied together to look like they'd been dumped(傾倒) from a truck all at once.
Von Wong hopes that his work will also help pressure big companies to reduce their plastic footprint.
(1)What are Von Wong's artworks intended for?
A.Beautifying the city he lives in.
B.Introducing eco-friendly products.
C.Drawing public attention to plastic waste.
D.Reducing garbage on the beach.
(2)Why does the author discuss plastic straws in paragraph 3?
A.To show the difficulty of their recycling.
B.To explain why they are useful.
C.To voice his views on modern art.
D.To find a substitute for them.
(3)What effect would "Truckload of Plastic" have on viewers?
A.Calming.
B.Disturbing.
C.Refreshing.
D.Challenging.
(4)Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.Artists' Opinions on Plastic Safety
B.Media Interest in Contemporary Art
C.Responsibility Demanded of Big Companies
D.Ocean Plastics Transformed into Sculptures組卷:175引用:5難度:0.5 -
13. Artificial intelligence (AI) has hit the headlines in recent months, particularly since the launch of ChatGPT in November. The chatbot can not only answer a broad range of questions, but also create original poems and stories.
Japan's first fully AI-created comic,Cyberpunk:Peach John, was released on March 9 by Shinchosha,a major publishing house.
The comic is based on the futuristic imagination of the author, whose pen name is Rootport. It describes how the Japanese folklore (民間傳說) hero Momotaro, who is said to have been born from a giant peach, lives in a dystopian (反烏托邦的) future.
All the fancy futuristic objects and creatures in the book, however, were designed and created by Midjourney along with other popular online image-generation AI tools such as Stable Diffusion and DALL-E 2.
Unlike traditional comic volumes which are usually black-and-white and short in length,Cyberpunk:Peach John comes in full color and spans more than 100 pages.A work of this length would normally take over a year to complete by even authors who are familiar with comic creation. However, with AI creation,it took the writer a surprisingly short period — only six weeks — to finish the whole work.
Despite gaining widespread attention as the first fully AI-drawn comic in Japan, the work has also raised some questions and concern as well.According to Gulf News and CNN,some people are worried that AI technology will threaten jobs and copyright ownership in the nation's thriving comic book industry,as well as creativity and artistic value.
One Twitter user described the project as "an absolute insult (侮辱) to comic and comic artists everywhere." Another wrote: "Weird to publish a comic by AI when your country has some of the most talented artists in existence."
But Rootport has insisted that his comic book should be considered a work of art. "AI cannot yet create a perfect work on its own.Human assistance is essential," he said.
(1)Who is the writer of the comic,Cyberpunk:Peach John?
A.Shinchosha.
B.Rootport.
C.Momotaro.
D.Midjourney.
(2)Which of the following is true?
A.The comic book is colorful and extremely time-saving in creation.
B.AI technology will definitely threaten jobs and copyright ownership.
C.Japan has the most talented comic artists in the world.
D.The comic book is considered a work of art.
(3)What's people's attitude towards the AI-drawn comic in the text?
A.Positive.
B.Negative.
C.Unconcerned.
D.Neutral.
(4)What is the main idea of the text?
A.AI-drawn comics have advantages over traditional ones.
B.AI-drawn comics have become a new trend in Japan.
C.Japan released its first fully AI-created comic.
D.People have different opinions on the first AI-created comic.組卷:11引用:7難度:0.3 -
14.Angus,Doris,Gabriel and Kamil are some of the 21 names that have been chosen to be given to storms in the UK in the 2016/17 season.
The Met Office, the UK's national weather service, decided to give storms boys' and girls' names in 2015 in the same way as they did in America.
The Met Office hopes that naming big storms will mean people are more aware (意識到) of them and how dangerous they can be.Derrick Ryall, from the Met Office, said, "We have seen how naming storms elsewhere in the world raises people's awareness of storms before they break."
In the past, the same UK storm could be given different names by different organizations. "We noticed that many organizations during the last couple of winters, when we have had bad storms, started giving names to them.Think back to the St Jude's Day storm in 2013,and the socalled Hurricane Bawbag in Scotland in 2011.But it led to confusion (混亂)," a Met Office spokeswoman said.
According to the Met Office, there is a name for each letter of the whole alphabet (字母表),except for Q,U,X,Y and Z.That is the same as the naming tradition used in America. And not all storms will be big enough to get names - only those expected to cause great damage.
If there are more than 21 storms in a year, the Met Office will start again with another name beginning with "A".However, according to Met Office spokeswoman Lindsay Mears, "It's unlikely we would get through the whole alphabet in one season. We had 14 storms in the very bad winter of 2013/14,and if the naming system had been in operation then we wouldn't have used the whole alphabet."
(1)Why are storms in the UK named?
A.To increase public awareness of them.
B.To remind people of their short stay.
C.To follow what other countries did.
D.To meet the needs of its people.
(2)Examples are given in Paragraph 4 to show
A.there're many storms to name in a year
B.organizations named storms differently
C.some storms' names are similar to others'
D.some storms' names are hard to understand
(3)What do we know about the names given to storms?
A.Storms will be given names whatever their sizes.
B.Serious storms will be given boy's names.
C.21 letters will be used to begin the names.
D.21 names will be given at most in a year.
(4)What can be learned from Lindsay Mears?
A.There are not too many big storms yearly.
B.Action will be taken to prevent storms.
C.There are usually 14 storms in a year.
D.The naming system will not change.組卷:57引用:3難度:0.6
