12.Just when we thought we had seen all the magical things that 3 D printing can do,here comes another - a working artificial leg has changed the life of a little Canadian duckling(鴨子) called Dudley, who had been struggling to live after losing a leg.
The story began on August 19th,2013,when the newly-born healthy Dudley and his brother were placed inside a chicken coop(籠子) at the K9-1-1 Animal and Rescue Services in Sicamous,British Columbia.Within a few hours,an aggressive chicken attacked the two, killing Dudley's brother and leaving him with a disability!
While Dudley could swim with his single leg,he had a hard time walking on the firm ground.Determined to help him,Doug Nelson, the owner of the shelter decided to consult Terence Loring, the founder of a design company that among other things also offers 3 D printing designs.
Considering he had just started 3 D printing designs,Terence somewhat hesitated to take on a duckling as his first client. But as soon as he saw brave little Dudley walking around on one leg,Terence knew he had to do something.Using his biomedical engineering training,Terence spent the next few weeks creating a 3 D template(模板),after he found out how ducks' legs work in YouTube videos about ducks.Once ready,he sent them to Ontario-based 3 D engineering firm Proto3000,who agreed to print the leg.
The second artificial leg was much stronger than the first one. When the artificial leg was fitted to Dudley, his whole manner changed. He wagged his tail and showed it off to his best friend一a pig called Elsie.
Of course,as Dudley has been growing, the leg and foot have had to be replaced. But that hasn't bothered Terence who continues to improve the design. The best part is that Terence has put all the designs on his website so that anyone wishing to help out an animal suffering from a similar injury can do so,by simply hitting the print button on his/her 3 D printer!
(1)How did Dudley lose his leg?
A.He wasn't well looked after.
B.He lost it in a traffic accident.
C.He lost it in a chicken attack.
D.He was born with a disability.
(2)What do we know about Terence Loring's design company?
A.It is the first one to offer 3 D printing designs.
B.3 D printing designs are one part of its services.
C.Its main clients are injured animals.
D.It often cooperates with Proto3000.
(3)What did Terence first do to make an artificial leg for Dudley?
A.Consulting Dudley's owner about the solution.
B.Creating a 3 D template
C.Being trained in biomedical engineering.
D.Watching YouTube videos about ducks.
(4)To Terence's great satisfaction,
A.Dudley has got a permanent artificial leg
B.a(chǎn) possible solution has been found to help suffering animals
C.he succeeded in his first attempt to make Dudley an artificial leg
D.his design has become widely known online組卷:2引用:1難度:0.5 -
13.Easy to make and cheap to buy, instant noodles have long been China's ultimate convenience food.
Since it was a snack for students,a meal on the train,or just the go-to choice for hungry workers, more than 46.2 billion packets were sold in China in 2013.But it seems this industry has gone off the boil.By 2016 those sales had declined to 38.5 billion, according to the World Instant Noodle Association,a drop of almost 17%.
"This phenomenon shows an unnoticeable while continuous change in China's consumption(消費)patterns," said Zhao Ping of the Academy of China Council for the Promotion of International Trade. He told the China Daily,"Consumers are more interested in life quality than just filing their bellies these days."
About 730 million people in China now have access to the Internet according to government figures. And about 95% of those are using smart phones to connect. And apps that offer food delivery to your home, office or wherever you happen to be are a real fast developing industry.
Their menus are undoubtedly more expensive than a pot of instant noodles. But these meals can still be inexpensive, and arguably more tasty, depending on your favour.
But put in the global background,China is still easily the biggest market for instant noodles. In fact,China's consumption was roughly equal to Indonesia,Japan,Vietnam,India, the US,South Korea and the Philippines combined.
And that means global noodle manufacturers are unlikely to turn away from the Chinese market.Japan's instant noodle business Nissin Foods, for example,is planning to land on the stock market,in Hong Kong,by which operation it hopes to raise about 145 million dollars. It is rare for a Japanese firm to list in Hong Kong, but Nissin is talking up its prospects in China, where it is already the fifth biggest brand.
"Some consumers stopped consuming instant noodles, but most consumers want to increase the quality(of food they consume)," chief executive Kiyotaka Ando told CNBC last week,"We can supply high-quality products so we have more possibility to develop our business."
(1)The phrase "go off the boil" in Paragraph 2 is close in meaning to
A.stop boiling
B.turn down
C.develop rapidly
D.get out of control
(2)According to the text,it is because of
A.the development of food manufacturing industry
B.the fall of price in foods beyond instant noodles
C.the technological development on communication
D.the people's doubt on instant noodles' food safety
(3)Which of the following descriptions is TRUE according to the text?
A.China consumes more instant noodle than any other country does.
B.China is beginning to lose its first place in instant noodle business.
C.Nissin is the fifth biggest brand of Japan's instant noodle business.
D.Nissin is planning to build an instant noodle factory in Hong Kong.
(4)We can infer from the text that
A.China's instant noodle consumption will continue to drop
B.Chinese people will favour cheaper instant noodles to save money
C.instant noodles will have a pessimistic prospect in the future
D.instant noodle manufacturers will focus more on its food quality組卷:1引用:1難度:0.5 -
14.Plastic recycling is a hot topic. But what's the real face behind it?You diligently sort your rubbish;you dutifully wash your plastic containers;then everything gets thrown in a landfill or in the ocean anyway.According to one analysis, only 9% of all plastic ever made has likely been recycled. Here's the kicker:the companies making all that plastic have spent millions on advertising campaigns lecturing us about recycling while knowing full well that most plastic will never be recycled.
A new investigation by National Public Radio (NPR) and the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS)reports that the large oil and gas companies that manufacture plastics have known for decades that recycling plastic was unlikely to ever happen on a broad scale because of the high costs involved. "They were not interested in putting any real money or effort into recycling because they wanted to sell raw material," Larry Thomas, former president of one of the plastic industry's most powerful trade groups, told NPR.There is a lot more money to be made in selling new plastic than reusing the old stuff. But,in order to keep selling new plastic, the industry had to clean up its wasteful image. "If the public thinks that recycling is working, then they are not going to be so concerned about the environment," Thomas noted.
We have been successfully convinced that people start pollution and people can stop it and that if we just recycle more, the planet will be OK.To some degree, that is right:there must be a level of personal responsibility when it comes to the climate emergency. We all have to do our part. But individual action is a tiny drop in a heavily polluted ocean. We need systematic change to make a real difference. And,more than anything,we need to change what we value.
(1)According to the text, what does the underlined word "kicker" probably mean?
A.A player who kicks the football.
B.An event that is controversial.
C.An action that is taken to start a plan quickly.
D.A discovery that is unpleasant and unexpected.
(2)Which best describes Larry Thomas' opinion on plastic recycling?
A.Plastic recycling is necessary and effective.
B.Large amounts of money are spent on recycling.
C.The companies try to promote the sales of new material.
D.The companies prefer to sell recycled material rather than new materials.
(3)What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.Most people have a sense of responsibility.
B.Plenty of rubbish is dropped into the ocean.
C.Fighting against pollution calls for joint efforts.
D.Systematic change was made to reduce pollution.組卷:1引用:1難度:0.5

19. Cold December wind passed right through my worn coat.I might have wished to be at home, but those days it wasn't much warmer there than it was standing at the bus stop.Mama had written a letter to the electric company explaining that we were late paying our bill because my sister was ill and Daddy had been laid off,but the power was cut off anyway. That's why we went to town to pay the bill in person.
I sat close to Buddy Earl for warmth on the bus when it finally showed up.The walk to the electric company office from the bus stop was only a couple of blocks, but it was a relief to get inside.
After settling the bill Mama brought us over to Rich's department store. There was Santa in a big wooden chair. "You two go to talk to him," she said. "Just don't expect to get all you ask for." Buddy Earl and I joined the line of children waiting, and Mama sat on a bench nearby.
Then Santa started talking with us and asked us what we wanted.Santa reached in his pocket, pulled out a notepad and scribbled something with a pencil. "Is your mother with you two?" he asked.I pointed to the bench. "That's our mother over there. She's waiting for us to finish." Santa lifted Buddy Earl off his knee. "Could you ask her to come and talk tome?" he said.
Later,Mama and Santa talked for a few minutes.Santa took a couple more notes. Then Mama brought us home.We didn't dare ask about their private conversation.Christmas morning Mama and Daddy gathered us around our tree to give thanks for all we had. There were no toys from Santa under the tree.No presents at all, really. But that was okay, especially since we had electricity again.I felt pretty good as I took my seat at the kitchen table.
