1.I must have always known reading was very important because the first memories I have as a child deal with books. There was not one night that I don't remember mom reading me a storybook by my bedside.I was extremely inspired by the elegant way the words sounded.
I always wanted to know what my mom was reading.Hearing mom say,"I can't believe what's printed in the newspaper this morning," made me want to grab it out of her hands and read it myself.I wanted to be like my mom and know all of the things she knew.So I carried around a book, and each night, just to be like her,I would pretend to be reading.
This is how everyone learned to read.We would start off with sentences, then paragraphs, and then stories. It seemed an unending journey, but even as a six-year-old girl I realised that knowing how to read could open many doors. When mom said,"The C-A-N-D-Y is hidden on the top shelf,"I knew where the candy was.My progress in reading raised my curiosity, and I wanted to know everything.I often found myself telling my mom to drive more slowly,so that I could read all of the road signs we passed.
Most of my reading through primary, middle and high school was factual reading.I read for knowledge, and to make A's on my tests.Occasionally,I would read a novel that was assigned, but I didn't enjoy this type of reading.I liked facts, things that are concrete.I thought anything abstract left too much room for argument.
Yet,now that I'm growing and the world I once knew as being so simple is becoming more complex,I find myself needing a way to escape.By opening a novel,I can leave behind my burdens and enter into a wonderful and mysterious world where I am now a new character. In these worlds I can become anyone.I don't have to write down what happened or what technique the author was using when he or she wrote this.I just read to relax.
We're taught to read because it's necessary for much of human understanding.Reading is a vital part of my life.Reading satisfies my desire to keep learning. And I've found that the possibilities that lie within books are limitless.

A hearing aid is a small electronic device you wear in or behind your ear to make sounds louder.A hearing aid has three basic parts:a microphone,an amplifier and a speaker. The hearing aid receives sound through a microphone, which changes the sound waves to electrical signals and sends them to an amplifier. The amplifier increases the power of the signals and sends them to the ear through a speaker. There are three styles of hearing aids.
●Behind-the-ear(BTE) aids are used by people of all ages."Mini" BTE is a new kind. These small and open-fit aids fit behind the ear completely, with a narrow tube into the ear canal, enabling the can al to remain open. Thus, some people prefer it because their own voice does not sound"plugged up".
●In-the-ear(ITE) aids fit completely inside the outer ear. Some ITE aids may have added features, such as a telecoil that allows users to receive sound through the circuitry of the hearing aid, rather than through its microphone.
●Canal aids fit into the ear canal and are available in two styles.In-the-canal (ITC) aids are made to fit the size and shape of the ear canal.Completely-in-canal(CIC) aids are hidden in the ear canal.
The hearing aid that will work best for you depends on your hearing needs and lifestyle.Price is also a key consideration. However, just because one hearing aid is more expensive than another does not necessarily mean that it will better suit your needs.Other features to consider include parts or services covered by the guarantee, estimated costs for repair, and the hearing aid company's reputation for quality and service.

3.Some students get so nervous before a test. They do poorly even if they know the material.Sian Beilock,a professor at the University of Chicago in Illinois, has studied these highly anxious test-takers.The students start worrying about the results. And when they worry,it actually uses up attention and memory resources (資源) .
Professor Beilock and another researcher,Gerardo Ramirez, have developed a possible solution.Just before an exam, highly anxious test-takers spend ten minutes writing about their worries about the test.
The researchers tested the idea on a group of twenty anxious college students. They gave them two short maths tests. After the first one, they asked the students to either sit quietly or write about their feelings about the upcoming second test.
Professor Beilock says those who sat quietly scored an average of 12% worse on the second test. But the students who had written about their fears improved their performance by an average of 5%.Next,the researchers used younger students in a biology class. They told them before final exams either to write about their feelings or to think about things unrelated to the test.Professor Beilock says highly anxious students who did the writing got an average grade of B+,compared to a B-for those who did not.
"What we showed is that for students who are highly test-anxious,who'd done our writing intervention (干預(yù)),all of a sudden there was no relationship between test anxiety and performance. They were performing just as well as their classmates who don't normally get nervous in these tests."
But what if students do not have a chance to write about their fears immediately before an exam?Professor Beilock says students can try it themselves at home or in the library and still improve their performance.
(1)What may the students start worrying about before an exam?
A.What other students do during the test.
B.Whether they can pass the exams.
C.Whether they have remembered the materials.
D.What kind of problems they will meet on the test paper.
(2)What is the solution developed by researchers?
A.Asking the students to ignore the test.
B.Asking the students to focus on the test.
C.Asking the students to sit quietly before the test.
D.Asking the students to write about their worries before the test.
(3)According to Professor Beilock, those who thought about things unrelated to the test
A.became less nervous before the test
B.were better at controlling their feelings
C.did better than those who wrote about their feelings
D.did worse than those who wrote about their feelings
(4)What can be learned from the last paragraph?
A.Writing about our worries before an exam can work a bit.
B.We can only write about our worries right before an exam.
C.It doesn't matter where we write about our worries before an exam.
D.The best place to write about our worries is in the test room.組卷:1引用:2難度:0.5 -

18. Prissy came to us as a puppy,a little black Pekinese mix with the cutest face.As cute as she was,Prissy had one major flaw —she couldn't even find her way home from the mailbox.
We spent half our time hunting for that dog.We live in a rural community of northwest Georgia —mostly woods and a small lake. She loved that lake, and spent most days patrolling the water's edge for frogs.
Prissy didn't always stay by the lake, though. She liked to explore.Consequently,it became an almost weekly ritual to look for her.We rescued her from a boot camp for troubled teens,a neighbor's house six miles away, and even once from fifty feet up an oak tree.
Prissy was smart but she never paid attention to where she was going. She would just put her nose to the ground and start following a squirrel, rabbit or stray cat. When she finished her mission she would have no idea how she got wherever she ended up.
After a while, most of our closer neighbors knew her.Consequently, she never really "had" to find her way home because she would just go to the nearest front door and cry and whine until they let her in.They'd call, and we'd drive over and get her.If we weren't home, they would just load her in their car and bring her home.
However, one time when she wandered off,no calls came in.
She had been missing for about fourteen hours, and none of our neighbors had seen her,so we decided to search by car.We drove up and down the surrounding roads calling out to her, driving slowly and checking house to house. After driving several miles in the surrounding area,we became discouraged and decided to head home to regroup and figure out what to do next.
