  • 11.Modern day robots may not be as entertaining as R2 D2 or the robot from Lost in Space, but robots are very important to space exploration and are being used in a variety of different ways for several important reasons.
Robots make great explorers on planets, the moon, and other landing areas.Aside from the earth, just about every surface in the solar system is unsafe for humans to explore. The air on most other planets is insufficient for humans to breathe, making it necessary to wear a space suit and oxygen equipment. The temperatures on these surfaces are much too hot or much too cold for any humans to withstand.Plus there would be complications with radiation, weather, and a lack of gravity.Robots have much less limitation in these areas and can survive much longer under these conditions.
Robots are designed for collecting scientific data.Robots are also able to perform many tasks at one time and can process information much quicker and more efficiently.Important scientific projects from detecting minerals, analyzing ground samples,to finding water are all performed much quicker and accurately by robots.
The use of robots has made the cost of space exploration much less expensive than it would cost for humans to do the work.In order to successfully send humans into space we would need to build a vehicle that can not only carry humans, but also enough food and water to keep them alive for the duration of the trip. Moreover, robots have no problems working for hours on end.Robots never complain, they don't require food or water, and they never need a bathroom break.
Over the past 30 years or so there have been many different types of robots used successfully in the exploration of space.Perhaps the most famous and successful robots are Spirit and Opportunity who have both been exploring the surface of Mars. They have both been very successful with experiments on soil and rocks and have even found evidence of water in Mars' history.

(1)Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

    A.The Development of Robots
    B.The Discovery of Space Exploration
    C.No Robots,No Space Exploration
D.Robots Are Used in Space Exploration
(2)According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?

A.The use of robots in space exploration costs more than the use of humans.
B.It is dangerous for humans to explore other surfaces in the solar system except the earth.
C.Both Spirit and Opportunity have found the evidence of water on Mars.
D.Many different types of robots have explored the space successfully.
(3)The underlined word "withstand" most probably means "
    ".
    A.remain
    B.bear
    C.defeat
    D.develop
(4)What is the writer's attitude in this passage?

    A.Negative.
    B.Persuasive.
    C.Subjective.
    D.Objective.

  • 12.The forest of today will not be the forests of tomorrow.Rising temperatures, trees being cut down, development and climate-change-caused disasters are changing the very makeup of the Earth's forests, new research published in Science finds.
Older, bigger trees are being lost at an alarming rate, making the planet's forests shorter and younger. The change is being driven at different rates by different causes in different places, the study's authors say,but the consequences will be global.
Old growth forests absorb and store massive amounts of climate-warming CO2.They provide habitats for rare and endangered species and promote rich biodiversity.Researchers found that the world lost roughly one-third of its old growth forests between 1900 and 2015.In North America and Europe, they found that tree mortality(死亡率) has doubled in the past 40 years.
"Warming temperatures, wildfires, logging and insect outbreaks were among the many causes of the decline," says Nate McDowell, the study's lead author. "What's perhaps more concerning is that the trajectory(發(fā)展軌跡) of all these disturbances is generally increasing over time and is expected to continue increasing in the future." he says.
McDowell's focus is on how trees are affected by rising temperatures, arguably the biggest driver of forest change. To get a broader understanding of how forests are changing globally,he brought in more than 20 other researchers in different fields.Together, they examined more than 160 previous studies about tree mortality and its global causes, applying current satellite data and modeling to create a look at the Earth's changing forests to date.
"It's not a shock, but it's very sad," says Kristina,an ecologist and leader of the ForestGEO Ecosystems &Climate Program who helped with the research. "We as a human society are hitting these forests so rapidly with so many different changes that they can't keep up." she says.

(1)What can we know from the figures in the paragraph 3?

A.More trees should be planted in no time.
B.We are losing old growth forests quickly.
C.Forests are important habitats for wildlife.
D.Different trees can absorb CO2 differently.
(2)What can we say about McDowell's research?

    A.Timely and long-standing.
    B.All-sided and careful.
    C.Time-limited and regional.
    D.Traditional and extensive.
(3)What's Kristina's attitude towards the findings of the research?

    A.Worried.
    B.Optimistic.
    C.Supportive.
    D.Indifferent.
(4)What's the writer's purpose of writing the passage?

A.To call on people to plant more trees.
B.To discuss the influence of climate change.
C.To warn against the loss of old growth forests.
D.To compare forests of today with those of the future.

  • 14.    A Spanish project is attempting to 3 D print coral reefs (珊瑚礁) to provide habitat for fish and protection for beaches and coastal communities at risk from rising seas and other damage.
Coral reefs are massively decreasing globally, and some scientists say we could lose 70-90% of our reefs due to warming ocean waters. That has all kinds of serious consequences because a quarter of the world's fish live in and around reefs, reefs are critically important protectors of beach communities threatened by high waves and tides, and they support a massive amount of biodiversity. That led marine biologist Lizzie Fane and her co-founder Alfred Martel,a computer scientist,to start Coastruction,a non-profit organization.
"Even if you start on a small scale (規(guī)模) ...a square kilometer already,it could have a great impact," Martel says. "It could really protect a coast,a beach,or an area where there is a community living and they need protection because the sea is rising."
Being able to 3 D print is important, because you match individual sites.Every location is different with different coral species. "It's like everybody has a different house," Fane says. "You can take into account habitat requirements of not just the coral but also the fish that live nearby."
Their current technology can print various shapes. The result can be an amazingly natural-looking man-made rock with plenty of corners for both coral and other fish to attach themselves and make homes.
The Coastruction founders don't think they can possibly meet the global demand,so their goal is to provide the tools — like the 3 D printer — for local people and design the technology to use cheap and locally-available materials to create the artificial coral reefs. No high temperatures or chemical additives are required, and any loose powder or sand material not used in one print will be used in the next. The 3 D printer works on-site,so there's no transport of finished blocks required.

(1)What does the underlined word "That" in paragraph 2 refer to?

    A.The biodiversity of coral reefs.
    B.The reduction in coral species.
    C.The protection coral reefs provide.
D.The loss of global coral reefs.
    (2)What do Martel's words imply?

A.3 D-printed reefs can hardly save oceans.
B.Small actions can make a lot of difference.
C.Small-scale production of reefs is a drop in the ocean.
D.3 D-printed reefs fail to provide perfect fish habitat.
(3)What do we know about the current 3 D reef printing?

A.It can just print regular-shaped reefs.
B.It can use any material to produce reefs.
    C.It can create lifelike reefs.
D.It can meet the global demand for reefs.
(4)What is one goal of the Coastruction founders?

A.Adapting their technology to local conditions.
B.Putting their reefs into mass production.
C.Transporting finished reefs to where they are needed.
D.Adding chemicals to reefs to make them colorful.

Every Day's a Gift One day, while I was watching Good Morning America, the news reporter,Robin Roberts, closed the morning show with this, "All you gentlemen, fifty years and older, should make it a point to get a PSA test.It is a simple blood test and could save your life."
I called my doctor's office that very morning to confirm what Robin had said. So,I made an appointment to have it done.Ten days later,my doctor told me, "Ray,you are a very healthy seventy-two-year-old.However,we got the result of your PSA test.It is high, and you probably have prostate (前列腺) cancer.I want to do a couple of biopsies (活檢) to confirm it."
When the biopsies came back,I was called into the office once again. "You definitely have prostate cancer," the doctor said.He explained to me the various treatment options that were available. After hearing the various treatments and their after-effects,I decided to have the prostate removed and get rid of the cancer entirely,as it had not spread yet.
After going through several pre-surgery tests,I was scheduled to be the first one to undergo the new Da Vinci method of removing prostate operation.Due to my old age and the first operation of its kind in the local hospital,a medical expert had been assigned to monitor the situation.
My surgery was successful. All the cancer had been removed. The next day,I was allowed to leave the hospital with the post-operative instructions and directions on how to do exercise to strengthen my muscles.I soon learned that all my functions were working well. What was even better was that my PSA level was zero.
One morning afterward,my wife and I spotted a sign by the road requesting volunteers for Suncoast Hospice (收容所) of Florida. We decided it was time to give back for our good fortune and recovery from the operation.
