  • 1.Malaria,the world's most widespread parasitic (寄生蟲引起的) disease, kills as many as three million people every year, almost all of whom are under five, very poor, and African. In most years, more than five hundred million cases of illness result from the disease, although exact numbers are difficult to assess(評估) because many people don't (or can't) search for care.It is not unusual for a family earning less than two hundred dollars a year to spend a quarter of its income on malaria treatment, and what they often get no longer works. In countries like Tanzania,Mozambique, and the Gambia,no family, village, hospital,or workplace can remain unaffected for long.
Malaria starts suddenly, with violent chills, which are soon followed by an intense (強烈的)fever and, often, headaches. As the parasites multiply(增加),they take over the entire body.Malaria parasites live by eating the red blood cells they infect (感染).They can also go into blood vessels in the brain. If it doesn't kill you, malaria can happen again and again for years. The disease passed on to humans by female mosquitoes(蚊子) infected with one of four species of parasite.Together, the mosquito and the parasite are the most dangerous couple in the history of the earth.Malaria has five thousand genes, and its ability to change rapidly to protect itself from attack and resist(抵抗) new drugs has made it nearly impossible to control.Studies show that mosquitoes are passing on the virus more frequently, and there are more outbreaks in cities with large populations. Some of the disease's spread is due to global warming.
For decades, the first-choice treatment for malaria parasites in Africa has been chloroquine,a chemical which is very cheap and easy to make.Unfortunately,in most parts of the world, malaria parasites have become resistant to it.Effective medicines that help prevent resistance are already available, but they have been in short supply and are very expensive. If these drugs should fail, nobody knows what would come next.

(1)According to paragraph 1,many people don't search for care because
    .
    A.they are too poor
B.it is unusual to seek care
C.they can remain unaffected for long
D.there are too many people suffering from the disease
    (2)People suffering from malaria
    .
    A.have to kill female mosquitoes
B.have their red blood cells infected
    C.have ability to defend parasites
    D.have sudden fever,followed by chills
(3)Which of the following may be the reason for the wide spread of the disease?

    A.Its resistance to global warming.
B.Its ability to pass on the virus frequently.
C.Its ability to protect itself from attack and resist new drugs.
D.Its outbreaks in cities with large populations.
(4)It can be inferred from the passage that
    .
A.the effective drugs are not easily available to most people
B.no drugs have been found to treat the disease
C.malaria has developed its ability to resist parasites
D.nobody knows what will be the drug to treat the disease

  • 2.    The Forbidden City, widely regarded as one of the most popular destinations at home and abroad, houses amazing Chinese cultural and historical relics, for which the Forbidden City is always well-known.But Masters in the Forbidden City does not just focus on the stories of the past.
Instead, the documentary movie, which came out in Chinese cinemas on Dec.16,focuses on ordinary people—the restorers of relics and antiquities.
The stories are told at a slow and relaxed pace, reflecting the restorers' work.Restoration of cultural relics and antiques can be time-consuming,and sometimes boring.Yet these restorers' patience and peace of mind are especially precious in a society where everything is changing so fast.
"If you choose this job,you have to put up with hours of work sitting on a chair. You need to be quiet and get used to being quiet," says Wang Jin,an ancient clock repair expert.
A touching part of the documentary is the spirit of craftsmanship (工藝)in the restorers. "Years of humdrum work requires not only skill, but also faith and spirit," China Daily commented, "Looking for preciseness and perfection, devoting yourself to work,patience,endurance,loneliness...All these qualities come from the craftsman spirit."
But unlike the popular idea of serious experts who sit around being serious, the documentary shows off the enthusiasm of the restorers. They play their guitars and make jokes about each other after a long day of restoration work.
One scene that has been very popular with Internet users features a young female restorer riding a bicycle through the empty Forbidden City on a Monday. While she is doing this,a narrator says, "The last person to do this was Puyi, the last emperor of the Qing Dynasty."
Masters in the Forbidden City has proved wrong many people's ideas about antique restorers, allowing them to realize that they are not old, dull professors, but people in their 40s,30s and even 20s who can be quite pleasing to the eye.

(1)According to the text, what's the main purpose of the documentary Masters in the Forbidden City?

A.To draw attention to Chinese antique restorers lives.
B.To display relics seldom seen by ordinary people.
C.To show people how antiques are restored.
D.To praise the craftsmanship of Chinese antique restorers.
(2)Which of the following statements is true?

A.Masters in the Forbidden focuses on the story of the past.
B.The inspiration of the documentary came out on Dec.16.
C.Masters in the Forbidden shows the passion of the restorers.
D.Masters in the Forbidden involves the story of serious experts.
(3)According to Wang Jin,we can learn that
    .
A.he often gets tired with his work
B.a(chǎn)ntique restorers need to be patient and peaceful
C.there is no need to do restoration work fast
D.it takes years of hard work to adapt to antique restoration
(4)The bicycle-riding scene in the documentary is used to
    .
A.remind the audience of the last Qing emperor
B.show the strange hobbies of young antique restorers
C.encourage the young to consider a career in antique restoration in the future
D.show that the documentary breaks from the old, dull image of antique restorers

  • 3.What would it be like to live on Mars?Volunteers are spending eight months in an area that looks much like the surface of Mars. They are isolated high on top of Mauna Loa,a volcanic mountain on the Big Island of Hawaii, living on a simulated,or make-believe,Mars Base.
The project called HI-SEAS is in the charge of Kim Binsted. She says this wild environment is as close to Mars as you can find on Earth.Because it is so high, the land is not warm or rich with plants, like the rest of Hawaii.
"You will see there is really no visible plant life or animal life. And you have got this wonderful volcanic material. "
Mauna Loa,2,500 metres above sea level,is geologically very similar to Olympus Mons on Mars and almost as tall as that Martian mountain. When measured from its base, deep in the ocean,Mauna Loa is the second largest mountain in our solar system, after the one on Mars.
The six-member HI-SEAS crew is mostly self-sufficient.Food and other supplies are brought to them. But the individuals bringing those supplies cannot communicate with volunteers inside the habitat,or base.
Kim Binsted says this experiment looks at how the astronauts interact,or get along with each other. "We study how well they work together, how we can keep them happy and supported, and not wanting to kill each other over these long durations. "
Crew members communicate with the outside world through e-mail and blogs. They also produce videos on the YouTube website.
"I am really enjoying this opportunity to live in this dome and pretend that I'm on Mars and get to learn all sorts of new skills, " one of them said.

  • 4.If you've been studying it for a while, you've probably worked out that there is more than one type of "English".Everyone knows English is the international language, for example, but did you know that India has the second largest number of English speakers, followed by Nigeria?
Like most languages, the two main factors that affect the way people speak English are geographical (where they are in the world) and social (the way their parents, friends and other people they talk to).
That's why in the UK,people from London speak differently from people who live in Manchester, but there are also lots of different accents within London, and they depend on social class.
Australian English and South African English are good examples of how English is different from all over the world. These accents sound "funny" to some other speakers of English, because they have been more influenced by other languages and accents. For example,Australian English was strongly influenced by Irish convicts(罪犯) sent by the British to Australia, who also brought their slang (俚語) with them.Australian English is also influenced by the Aboriginal(土著的)language,so it includes words like "Kangaroo" and "Billabong" (a large pool of water in the outback).
So,how a Chinese student chooses which accent to use?Well,to an Australian like me,British English sounds more academic and educated than American English.American English sounds cooler, though—it's the language of popular culture and blockbuster movies(電影大片).
In the end,the choice is yours, just remember to keep up.

(1)What's the best title for the passage?

    A.British English and American English.
    B.English comes in different forms.
    C.How Australian English is formed.
    D.Which English to choose.
(2)Which country has the second largest population of speaking English?

    A.India.
    B.Australia.
    C.Nigeria.
    D.China.
(3)Which can we conclude from the passage?

    A.The writer speaks British English.
B.People from London believe their accents are the best.
C.South African English is the same as Australian English.
D.Social class causes the different accents in London.
(4)According to the writer,it's good for a Chinese student to
    .
A.watch more films made in America
    B.learn more academic British English
    C.pick up cooler American English
D.choose the English language to his/her taste and stick to it

  • 18.Mr.Birkway was my English teacher, and when I met him on that first day in my new school,I didn't know what to make of him.He was one of those energetic teachers who loved his subject half to death and walked about the room dramatically, waving his arms and patting (輕拍) people on the back.
He said, "Brilliant!" and "Wonderful!"and "Terrific!" He was quite tall and slim, and his bushy black hair made him look like a wild native at times. He had deep brown cow eyes that sparkled (閃耀) all over the place, and when he turned these eyes on you,you felt as if his whole purpose in life was to stand there and listen to you,and you alone.
Midway through the first class,Mr.Birkway asked if we had our summer journals.I hadn't a clue as to what he was talking about. Some of the other students started nodding like crazy, and Mr.Birkway spread out his arms and said, "Wonderful!" He received the journals excitedly. "Thank you," he said to each journal-giver.
I was extremely worried.I had no journal.
When he got to Beth Ann's desk,Mr.Birkway lifted up her journal and looked inside. "I didn't write much," Ann said. "In fact,I can hardly remember what I wrote about at all."
"Don't worry about it too much," Mr.Birkway said with a smile. "Next time, try writing about something you like-a place,a room,a person.Just write whatever comes to mind." Then he moved on.
On top of Mary Lou's desk were six journals.Mr.Birkway stood open-mouthed and said, "Is it — can it be — Shakespeare?" He counted the journals. "Six!Brilliant!"
Christy and Megan, two girls who had their own club called the GGP (whatever that meant),were whispering over on the other side of the room and casting disapproving looks in Mary Lou's direction.Mary Lou kept her hand on top of the journals as Mr.Birkway reached for them.In a low voice she said, "I don't want you to read them."
