  • 11.Cigarette ends are everywhere--littering our streets and beaches--and for decades they've been thought of as "unrecyclable".But a New Jersey-based company, called Terracycle, has taken on the challenge, and has come up with a way to recycle millions of cigarette ends and turn them into industrial plastic products. Its aim is to recycle things that people normally consider impossible to reuse.
Obviously it would be even better for the environment if everyone just stopped smoking but the statistics show that although there has been an increase in anti-smoking ads and posters, between 2000 and 2014.jye.ai sales of cigarettes increased by 8 percent, and a whole lot of those cigarette ends ended up as trash:Since most of our litter eventually ends up in waterways, cigarette ends can surely pollute the surrounding environment. "It only takes a single cigarette end to pollute a liter of water," Temacycle's founder,Tom Swak, said. "Animals can also mistake cigarette ends littered for food."
So how do you go about turning all those poisonous ends into something useful?Terracycle does this by first breaking them down into separate parts. They mix the remaining materials, such as the tobacco and the paper, with other kinds of rubbish, and use it on non-agricultural land, such as golf courses. The filters (過濾嘴) are a little harder. To recycle these.Terracycle first makes them clean and cuts them into small pieces, and then combines them with other recycled materials, making them into liquid for industrial plastic products.
They're now also expanding their recycling offerings to the rest of the 80 percent of household waste that currently can't be recycled, such as chocolate packaging, pens, and mobile phones. The goal is to use the latest research to find a way to stop so much waste ending up in landfills, and then get companies to provide money for the process. And now,it works well.
"We haven't found anything that we can't recycle," communications director of Terracycle,Albe Zakes, said. "But with the amount and varieties of packaging and litter in the world,we are always looking for new waste streams to address."

(1)What does Terracycle intend to do?

A.Search for recyclable materials for use.
B.Deal with as many cigarette ends as possible.
C.Produce new kinds of industrial plastic products.
D.Recycle what used to be considered unrecyclable.
(2)What does the underlined word "trash" in Paragraph 2 probably mean?

    A.Rubbish.
    B.Poison.
    C.Disaster.
    D.Ruin.
(3)What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?

A.The effective use of cigarette ends.
B.The process of recycling cigarette ends.
C.The difficulty in recycling cigarette ends.
D.The reason for breaking down cigarette ends.
(4)What do Albe's words in the last paragraph imply?

A.There is more and more waste to be recycled
B.It is difficult for Terracycle to recycle everything.
C.Terracycle is trying to meet the challenge of new waste.
D.Terracycle has successfully recycled a large amount of waste.

  • 12.The forest of today will not be the forests of tomorrow.Rising temperatures, trees being cut down, development and climate-change-caused disasters are changing the very makeup of the Earth's forests, new research published in Science finds.
Older, bigger trees are being lost at an alarming rate, making the planet's forests shorter and younger. The change is being driven at different rates by different causes in different places, the study's authors say,but the consequences will be global.
Old growth forests absorb and store massive amounts of climate-warming CO2.They provide habitats for rare and endangered species and promote rich biodiversity.Researchers found that the world lost roughly one-third of its old growth forests between 1900 and 2015.In North America and Europe, they found that tree mortality(死亡率) has doubled in the past 40 years.
"Warming temperatures, wildfires, logging and insect outbreaks were among the many causes of the decline," says Nate McDowell, the study's lead author. "What's perhaps more concerning is that the trajectory(發(fā)展軌跡) of all these disturbances is generally increasing over time and is expected to continue increasing in the future." he says.
McDowell's focus is on how trees are affected by rising temperatures, arguably the biggest driver of forest change. To get a broader understanding of how forests are changing globally,he brought in more than 20 other researchers in different fields.Together, they examined more than 160 previous studies about tree mortality and its global causes, applying current satellite data and modeling to create a look at the Earth's changing forests to date.
"It's not a shock, but it's very sad," says Kristina,an ecologist and leader of the ForestGEO Ecosystems &Climate Program who helped with the research. "We as a human society are hitting these forests so rapidly with so many different changes that they can't keep up." she says.

(1)What can we know from the figures in the paragraph 3?

A.More trees should be planted in no time.
B.We are losing old growth forests quickly.
C.Forests are important habitats for wildlife.
D.Different trees can absorb CO2 differently.
(2)What can we say about McDowell's research?

    A.Timely and long-standing.
    B.All-sided and careful.
    C.Time-limited and regional.
    D.Traditional and extensive.
(3)What's Kristina's attitude towards the findings of the research?

    A.Worried.
    B.Optimistic.
    C.Supportive.
    D.Indifferent.
(4)What's the writer's purpose of writing the passage?

A.To call on people to plant more trees.
B.To discuss the influence of climate change.
C.To warn against the loss of old growth forests.
D.To compare forests of today with those of the future.

  • 13.I'd been retired for four years, when a friend suggested university.I thought he was joking—I was rubbish at school and failed my 11-plus.But we love to compete over Mastermind and University challenge, and he thought I'd make it.And he was absolutely right!
I did a foundation course first, which was part time at the University Lifelong Learning Centre(LLC),two nights a week and the odd Saturday.I did quite well, and that gave me the confidence to do a full time, three year degree.I'm passionate about art and I always wanted to be here for the journey and not the destination. That sounds really corny, but it was the truth in my case.
Initially it was a bit strange fitting in with my course mates. They were all 18,straight out of sixth form or college.Over time, though, they've all been fine — now,we all get on really well and there is no issue.I've made plenty of friends as a member of the mature students society, and I do some volunteering through the LLC,chatting to prospective students about my experience of coming to university.I tell them my story and basically encourage them to give it a go because you've got nothing to lose.I like to think I've convinced a few of them.
I have no regrets at all.Enrolling in university was the best piece of advice I've received in years, especially post-retirement.I needed routine in my life;I needed purpose.I'm not going to spend my day in the bookies or the pub.If you've got a passion for something, you should pursue it.

(1)What do we learn from Paragraph 1?

A.The author often competed with his friend at university.
B.The author was satisfied with his performance at school.
C.The advice of his friend was a big challenge for the author.
D.The author's friend told a joke when suggesting university.
(2)What was it that made him determined to pursue a full time degree?

A.His long held passion for art.
    B.His boring retirement life.
C.His success in the foundation course.
D.His desire to travel to the destination.
(3)What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?

A.How he got along with his course mates.
B.How he helped his friends at university.
C.What activities he took part in at school.
D.What he experienced as a volunteer.
(4)Which of the following can serve as the title of the passage?

    A.Knowledge is power.
B.It's never too old to learn.
C.Failure is the mother of success.
D.A friend in need is a friend indeed.

  • 14.Matthew Youlden speaks nine languages fluently and understands more than a dozen more.(1)
.When I told Matthew how I've been struggling to merely pick up a second language,he had the following advice for me.
       Know why you're doing it
This might sound obvious, but if you don't have a good reason to learn a language, you are less likely to stay motivated(有積極性的) over the long-run. (2)
.Wanting to get to know a French person in his or her own language is another matter entirely. No matter what your reason is,once you've decided on learning a language,it's crucial to commit(投入).
       (3)

Matthew learned several languages together with his twin brother Michael. They tackled their first foreign language,Greek, when they were only eight years old!Even if you can't get a sibling to join you on your language adventure, having any kind of partner will push both of you to always try just a little bit harder and stay with it.
       Have fun with it
       (4)
Think of some fun ways to practise your new language:make a radio play with a friend, draw a comic strip, write a poem,or simply talk to whomever you can.
       Act like a child
We learn by making mistakes. (5)
But as adults, mistakes become taboo.Think how an adult is more likely to say,"I can't",rather than,"I haven't learned that yet (I can't swim,I can't drive,I can't speak Spanish)".When it comes to learning a language, admitting that you don't know everything is the key to growth and freedom.

    A.Find a partner
    B.Leave your comfort zone
C.We work in the same office in Berlin
D.As kids,we are expected to make mistakes
E.You're learning a language to be able to use it
F.Using your new language in any way is a creative act
G.Wanting to impress English-speakers with your French is not a very good reason
