  • 11.Craig grew up on "a gentleman's farm" in Colorado with horses, cows, and chickens. When he was 18,Craig was already running some of the businesses. He planned to earn a business degree in college, but on a fateful trip to Florida,he visited a friend who worked as a grounds-keeper at a zoo. "I just wanted to say hi,but he showed me around, and in the back,I saw lions and tigers in these cages that were so small that you wouldn't want to keep a dog in them," he says. The animals were surplus(過(guò)剩)and would likely be euthanized(使安樂(lè)死).
When a sad Craig returned to Colorado,he called the Denver Zoo about taking the animals, but Denver's zookeepers also had a surplus. Then it occurred to him:Perhaps he could bring the animals to the family farm.He was only 19,but he studied local regulations and formed a nonprofit organization. He next wrote zoos nationwide offering to help if they planned to euthanize animals.
After about five years,he bought a second, larger property before moving to the shelter's current location northeast of Denver. The goal,he says,is to provide the animals with plentiful space and to treat them with dignity and respect. "We have prides of lions that live together, just like they would in the wild," he says. "They're wandering free and playing and doing what they want.We just give them medical care and food."
Craig opened the shelter to visitors in 2002.Although he was originally unwilling,Craig now sees it as an opportunity to educate more people. "We want the public to know,if they hear about some guy driving around in his Ferrari with a tiger or a lion, they should say,What are you doing? That animal is going to end up dead or in some dirty roadside zoo." The shelter receives 150,000 guests a year.Given his goal of treating the animals with respect-the shelter prohibits feeding and hands-on human contact -visitors observe the animals from a 30-foot-high,1.5-mile-long elevated walkway.

(1)What made Craig decide to help animals?

A.The need to run his farm.
    B.The influence from his friend.
C.The concern for animals to be euthanized.
D.The plan to earn a business degree from a college.

    A.To draw visitors.
    B.To play with animals.
    C.To live a comfortable life.
    D.To offer animals more space.
(3)How do visitors observe the animals in the shelter?

    A.By riding a car.
    B.By taking an elevator.
    C.Through contact with animals.
D.From the passage above the ground.

  • 13.    Less than a few days after a chatbot called My AI was launched to users,Helen Lee,a mother from Missouri, told her 10-year-old daughter to stay away from this new chatting tool. "I don't think she knows how to separate humans and machines because they appear almost the same on the Internet," Lee said.
Powered by ChatGPT,a computer programme which can have conversations with humans,My AI can offer recommendations, answer questions and chat with users. But it has a vital difference:You don't need to visit a website because it shows up on your social media app.So it also may be less clear than you're talking to a computer.
This new tool is facing bad review s not only from parents but also from some users out of privacy concerns.Michael Smiths,a manager at a software company, uncovered that it gave kids with suggestions on how to lie to their parents.Other users also shared worries about how the tool collects information from their phones. "I took a picture...and it said 'nice shoes' and asked who the people were in the picture."
But not all users dislike the tool. One user wrote that she's been asking My AI for help with homework. "It gets all of the questions right." Another user said she got comfort and assistance from it. "It offers really great ideas on some real-life situations.I love the support it gives."
The tech company said it would continue to better My AI and is working to set some bottom lines and guidelines to keep its users safe.In a blog post last week, the company said, "My AI is far from perfect but we've made a lot of progress."
For now, parents should remind their kids not to share anything personal with it."Chatbot is not your friend," said Michael Smiths. "Anyone interact ing with it needs to be very cautious, especially teenagers who may be more likely to trust what it says."

(1)What is Helen Lee's attitude towards My AI?

A.She uses it as a tool.
B.She is not in favour of it.
C.She hopes to learn about it.

  • 14.Americans use many expressions with the word"dog".People in the United States love their dogs and treat them well.(1)
However, dogs without owners to care for them lead a different kind of life. The expression,to lead a dog's life, describes a person who has an unhappy existence.
Some people say we live in a dog-eat-dog world.(2)
They say that to be successful,a person has to work like a dog. This means they have to work very, very hard.Such hard work can make people dog-tired.And,the situation would be even worse if they became sick as a dog.
       (3)
This means that every person enjoys a successful period during his or her life.To be successful, people often have to learn new skills.Yet,some people say that you can never teach an old dog new tricks. They believe that older people do not like to learn new things and will not change the way they do things.
       (4)
People who are unkind or uncaring can be described as meaner than a junkyard dog.Junkyard dogs live in places where people throw away things they do not want.Mean dogs are often used to guard this property. They bark or attack people who try to enter the property. However, sometimes a person who appears to be mean and threatening is really not so bad.We say his bark is worse than his bite.
Dog expressions are also used to describe the weather. The dog days of summer are the hottest days of the year.A rainstorm may cool the weather. But we do not want it to rain too hard.(5)

A.Still, people say every dog has its day.
    B.Dogs are human's best friends.
C.Some people are compared to dogs in bad ways.
D.We do not want it to rain cats and dogs.
E.There are many other expressions waiting for you to explore.

Alan and the other campers sat around the fire, talking and laughing. It would be Alan's first night in a tent, and he was excited and a little nervous.
Then, the conservation area officer spoke, "Much of the wildlife in this region comes out only at night. So after supper, let's start a night watch.Volunteers will take turns to stay down here by the fire, away from the tents. Those who take part will get a chance to see a different world."
       "Isn't it dangerous?" someone asked.
"No,it's quite safe," the officer said. "There are no dangerous animals.Any volunteers?"
The kid who'd sat next to Alan on the bus volunteered.
       Alan sat still.
Then one of the girls raised her hand.
"If a girl could do it,I could, too," Alan thought. He volunteered.A few more kids raised their hands. Then the officer explained, "This is how it works. When the rest of you go to bed,the first watcher takes his or her place by the fire. The duty of the watcher is to keep the fire going. After thirty minutes,he or she wakes up the next person.Do you still want to volunteer?"
Alan nodded but felt a little nervous.Sleeping in a tent with other campers sounded OK,but the idea of being alone in the dark made him afraid.
The officer showed the order of the watch.
At ten past two in the evening,Alan found himself sitting by the fire,in a great world of darkness. He had never been so afraid.Alan had to turn off his flashlight(手電筒) because he had used it too often. He looked at the stars and the rising moon.It wasn't as dark as he'd thought it would be.He took comfort in that and tried to relax a little.
Looking around,Alan thought he saw a large bird flying down through the air and wondered if it was an owl(貓頭鷹).He had seen small paw prints on the sand by the river.
