  • 11.My parents influenced us with the concepts of family, faith and patriotism when I was young.Even though we struggled to make ends meet, they stressed how fortunate we were to live in a great country with limitless opportunities.
I got my first real job when I was ten.My dad,Benjamin, injured his back working in a cardboard - box factory and was retrained as a hairstylist. He rented space in a little mall and gave his shop the fancy name of Mr.Ben's Coiffure.
The owner of the shopping center gave Dad a discount on his rent for cleaning the parking lot three nights a week, which meant getting up at 3 a.m..To pick up trash,Dad used a little machine that looked like a lawn mower.Mom and I emptied garbage cans and picked up litter by hand.It took two to three hours to clean the lot.I'd sleep in the car on the way home.I did this for two years, but the lessons I learned have lasted a lifetime,I acquired discipline and a strong work morality, and learned at an early age the importance of balancing life's competing interests---in my case, school, homework and a job. This really helped during my senior year of high school, when I worked 40 hours a week flipping hamburgers,at a fast - food joint while taking a full load of college - prep courses. The hard work paid off.I attended the U.S.Military Academy and went on to receive graduate degree in law and business from Harvard.Later,I joined a big Los Agnates law firm and was elected to the California state assembly. In these jobs and in everything else I've done,I have never forgotten those nights in the parking lot.The experience taught me that there is dignity in all work and that if people are working to provide for themselves and their families, that is something we should honor.

A.The author got a high pay by working hard.
B.The author compounded of the hard work.

  • 13.The World Health Organization (WHO) recently said that it planned to add gaming disorder(游戲障礙)to its new list of disease classifications, angering the gaming industry but pleasing doctors who hope it may make treatment more easily available.
Some US experts said it would make little difference when it comes to helping people with the disorder, although others said it would bring attention to a disorder that people sometimes don't recognize.
Many of us enjoy video games, but does playing our favorite game for a couple of hours every night mean we're suffering from gaming disorder? No,according to the WHO.
The symptoms(癥狀)listed by the WHO include a lack of control over gaming, treating gaming more seriously than other life interests and daily activities, and continuing to play games despite the negative consequences that playing them might have.
"The behavior pattern is enough to result in large damage to one's personal, family,or social life." the WHO said.
Meanwhile,Douglas Gentile of low State University has carried out influential research into the cause of gaming addiction in young people.
"I and many others had assumed that gaming is not really a problem but is a symptom of other problems," he told NBC News. Many had thought it was simply a failure of self-control.
To see if it was,Gentile's team studied a group of children who had been gaming for several years. "We found that when kids became addicted, their anxiety increased and their grades decreased," Gentile said. When kids were able to back off from gaming, their symptoms disappeared,he added.
Gentile thinks medical organizations should pay attention to the WHO's suggestion.
"This isn't an issue of opinion;it's an issue of science," he said.
"This is a major scientific and medical organization. They don't do things lightly and without reason.
Dr Petros Levounis, chair of psychiatry(精神病學)at the New Jersey Medical School at Rutgers University, said that he hoped the WHO's suggestion would lead to more research into obsessive(過度的)behavior among all types of people.

(1)Which of the following is a sign of gaming disorder according to the WHO?

    A.Putting games before everything else.
B.Playing games for several hours every night.
C.Having no hobbies but playing games.
D.Keeping playing until winning the games.
    (2)Why is Gentile's research mentioned?

A.To explain the symptoms of gaming addiction.
B.To show the impact of gaming disorder.
C.To show the reasons behind the WHO's decision.
D.To introduce the study that influenced the WHO's proposal.
(3)What did Levounis think of the WHO's decision?

A.It needed further research to make it more convincing.
B.It would do little to help people with gaming addiction.
C.It would encourage new cures for gaming disorder.
D.It would encourage studies about diseases similar to gaming disorder.
    (4)What's the article mainly about?

A.The WHO explaining what gaming disorder is.
B.New research findings about gaming disorder.
C.The benefits of defining gaming as a disease.
D.The discussions about defining gaming disorder as a disease.

  • 14.    Biologists from the John Innes Centre in England discovered that plants have a biological process which divides their amount of stored energy by the length of the night. This solves the problem of how to portion out (分配) energy reserves during the night so that the plant can keep growing yet not risk burning off all its stored energy.
While the sun shines, plants perform photosynthesis (光合作用).In this process, the plants change sunlight, water and carbon dioxide into stored energy in the form of long chains of sugar, called starch (淀粉).At night, the plants burn this stored starch to fuel continued growth.
"The calculations are precise so that plants prevent starvation but also make the most efficient use of their food," said study co-author Alison Smith. "If the starch store is used too fast, plants will starve and stop growing during the night. If the store is used too slowly, some of it will be wasted."
The scientists studied the plant Arabidopsis, which is regarded as a model plant for experiments. To give the plants some math tests, the biologists let night arrive unexpectedly early or late for them.
During one of the exams, they shut off the lights early on them that had been grown with twelve-hour days and nights.Putting them into darkness after only an eight-hour day means they didn't have time to store as much starch as usual. And this forced the plants to adjust their normal nightly rhythm.
Amazingly, even after this day length trick, the plants did very well in their exams and ended up with just five percent of starch left over at the end of the night. They had neither starved, nor stored starch that could have been used to fuel more growth.
The authors suggested that similar biological calculators may explain how a migratory bird, the little stint, can make a five-thousand-kilometer journey to their summer habitat in the Arctic and arrive with enough fat reserves to survive only approximately half a day more,on average.
The results of the study were published in e Life.

    (1)According to the passage,plants
    .
A.use little energy during the day
    B.usually stop growing at night
C.waste a lot of energy at night
    D.store starch during the day
(2)What did the scientists do when studying Arabidopsis?

A.They changed the plant's light conditions.
B.They provided the plant with more starch.
C.They tried to keep the plant's natural rhythm.
D.They attached a biological calculator to the plant.
    (3)When morning arrived,the experimental plants
    .
A.nearly died of lack of food
B.used most of their stored energy
C.began to regulate their food store
D.stored enough starch for the next day
(4)What can we learn about the little stint?

A.They may have a system to control energy consumption.
B.They often die during their long and difficult journey.
C.They leave the Arctic in summer every year.
D.They are unable to calculate the distances.

Perhaps most importantly,79 percent mentioned they would believe more in themselves.
However, parents on their own aren't giving kids that time.(5)
A 2017 report found that less than 10 percent British kids enjoys themselves in nature, compared to 40 percent of adults when they were younger years ago.To improve the situation, the organization is calling on the government to free up a daily hour for nature time for kids.
