11.You've heard that plastic is polluting the ocean—between 4.8 and 12.7 million tonnes enter ocean ecosystems every year. But does one plastic straw or cup really make a difference?Artist Benjamin Von Wong wants you to know that it does.He builds massive sculptures out of plastic garbage, forcing viewers to re-examine their relationship to single-use plastic products.
At the beginning of the year, the artist built a piece called "Strawpocalypse," a pair of 10-foot-tall plastic waves, frozen mid-crash.Made of 168,000 plastic straws collected from several volunteer beach cleanups, the sculpture made its first appearance at the Estella Place shopping center in Ho Chi Minh City,Vietnam.
Just 9% of global plastic waste is recycled.Plastic straws are by no means the biggest source(來源)of plastic pollution, but they've recently come under fire because most people don't need them to drink with and, because of their small size and weight, they cannot be recycled.Every straw that's part of Von Wong's artwork likely came from a drink that someone used for only a few minutes.Once the drink is gone, the straw will take centuries to disappear.
In a piece from 2018,Von Wong wanted to illustrate(說明)a specific statistic:Every 60 seconds,a truckload's worth of plastic enters the ocean. For this work, titled "Truckload of Plastic," Von Wong and a group of volunteers collected more than 10,000 pieces of plastic, which were then tied together to look like they'd been dumped(傾倒) from a truck all at once.
Von Wong hopes that his work will also help pressure big companies to reduce their plastic footprint.
(1)What are Von Wong's artworks intended for?
A.Beautifying the city he lives in.
B.Introducing eco-friendly products.
C.Drawing public attention to plastic waste.
D.Reducing garbage on the beach.
(2)Why does the author discuss plastic straws in paragraph 3?
A.To show the difficulty of their recycling.
B.To explain why they are useful.
C.To voice his views on modern art.
D.To find a substitute for them.
(3)What effect would "Truckload of Plastic" have on viewers?
A.Calming.
B.Disturbing.
C.Refreshing.
D.Challenging.
(4)Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.Artists' Opinions on Plastic Safety
B.Media Interest in Contemporary Art
C.Responsibility Demanded of Big Companies
D.Ocean Plastics Transformed into Sculptures組卷:175引用:5難度:0.5 -
12.Improved air quality to reduce ozone (臭氧) pollution may have avoided the loss of 1.5 billion birds during the past 40 years,a study found. That's nearly 20% of bird life in the United States today.
Ozone,a gas that appears in nature,is also produced by human activities, including by power plants and cars. The ozone in the upper atmosphere protects the Earth from the harmful ultraviolet rays (紫外線) of the sun.But ground-level ozone is harmful and pollutes the air we breathe.
To examine the relationship between bird populations and air pollution, the researchers used models that connected bird observations from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology's eBird program with ground-level pollution data. They tracked monthly changes in bird populations, air quality, and regulation status (治理現(xiàn)狀) for 3,214 US counties over a period of 15 years. The findings suggest that ozone pollution is most harmful to the small birds—such as sparrows, warblers and finches—that make up 86% of all North American land-bird species.Ozone pollution directly harms birds by damaging their breathing systems, and indirectly harms their food sources.
"Not only can ozone cause direct physical damage to birds, but it also can harm plant health and reduce numbers of the insects that birds eat," said co-author Amanda Rodewald. "Not surprisingly, birds that cannot get high-quality habitat or food resources are less likely to survive or reproduce successfully. The good news here is that environmental policies intended to protect human health and return important benefits to birds too."
This work contributes to our ever increasing understanding of the connection of environmental health and human health.
(1)How many birds are there in the United States now?
A.0.75 billion.
B.1.5 billion.
C.3 billion.
D.7.5 billion.
(2)What is the result of the findings?
A.Ozone pollution harms birds' food sources indirectly.
B.86% of North American land-bird species are extinct.
C.3,214 counties in America have effective regulations.
D.The researchers have observed birds for many years.
(3)What is Amanda Rodewald's attitude towards birds' future in the US?
A.Worried.
B.Positive.
C.Uncaring.
D.Doubtful.
(4)What is the suitable title for the text?
A.Ground-Level Ozone Makes up Most of the Air We Breathe
B.Environmental Policies Intend to Protect Human Health
C.Reduced Ozone Pollution May Have Avoided Bird Deaths
D.Regulations Bring Important Protection Benefits to Birds組卷:7引用:2難度:0.5 -
13.World's Largest Active Volcano Erupts in Hawaii Hawaii's Mauna Loa,the largest active volcano in the world, has erupted for the first time in nearly 40 years,US authorities said, erupting lava and ash Monday,Nov.28th,2022 as emergency crews went on alert.
Flows of lava remained mostly contained within the peak's huge caldera, but the eruption could pose a threat to nearby residents if conditions change, the United States Geological Survey reported at 11:45 pm local time Sunday about 15 minutes after the eruption inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
Mauna Loa has been showing signs of erupting for years, according to the USGS,which said the ongoing eruption was visible from Kona,a town on the west coast of Hawaii's main island about 72 kilometers from the volcano.
"Lava is still erupting from the peak and is overflowing from the caldera," the USGS said on its website, referring to the basin at the top of a volcano. While it added there were "no threats to populated areas currently," it urged area residents to review preparation procedures.
Hawaii authorities said no evacuation(撤離,疏散) orders have been given, although the peak area and several roads in the region were closed, and two shelters have been opened.
Robin George Andrews,a scientist, said a larger threat exists if lava begins to pour out of so-called rift zones(裂谷帶).
While there is no evidence yet of this occurring now on Mauna Loa, "the fact that it is a dangerous mountain that hasn't erupted since 1984— the longest eruptive pause in its recorded history— is why we should all keep an eye on it," Andrews said.
One of six active volcanoes on the Hawaiian islands,Mauna Loa has erupted 33 times since 1843,according to USGS.
The most recent eruption,in 1984,lasted 22 days and produced lava flows which reached to within about 7 kilometers of Hilo,a city to the northeast which is home to about 44,000 people today.
(1)Which of the following statements would USGS agree with?
A.The eruption time is correctly predicted.
B.The eruption is within expectation.
C.The eruption results have been under control.
D.The eruption will pose a threat to people living nearby.
(2)What suggestion is given to residents in paragraph 4?
A.Leaving their houses as soon as possible.
B.Putting up more shelters in a short time.
C.Listening to evacuation orders often.
D.Making some preparations.
(3)According to Robin George Andrews, what's the potential danger?
A.No one knows how to judge the eruptive pause.
B.There are more people living near the rift zones.
C.There is a possibility that the lava pours out of rift zones.
D.All the six active volcanoes on the Hawaiian islands will erupt.
(4)Why does the author write this passage?
A.To give advice about protecting the environment.
B.To stress the importance of natural's power.
C.To tell a piece of news to the readers.
D.To introduce the history of volcanos.組卷:3引用:2難度:0.5 -

19.閱讀下面短文,根據(jù)所給情節(jié)進行續(xù)寫,使之構(gòu)成一個完整的故事。
One Saturday morning when Susan went,as usual,to Thompson's hotel,to receive the price of her mother's washing for the guests, which amounted to five dollars, she found the hotelkeeper in the yard.
He was apparently in a bad temper with some dealers with whom he had been bargaining. He held in his hand an open wallet, full of bills.Hardly noticing the child as she made her request, except to swear(罵罵咧咧) at her for troubling him when he was busy,he handed her a bank note.
Glad to escape so easily,Susan rushed out of the gate, and then, pausing to pin the money safely in the folds of her worn scarf, she discovered that he had given her two bills instead of one.She looked around.Nobody was near to share her discovery, and her first impulse was joy at the unexpected prize.
"It is mine, all mine, " she murmured. " I will buy mother a new coat with it,and she can give her old one to sister Mary, and then Mary can go to the Sunday school with me next winter.I wonder if it will buy a pair of shoes for brother Tom,too."
At that moment she realized that the hotelkeeper must have given it to her by mistake, and therefore she had no right to it,as she was always told by her mother the Golden Rule-What belongs to you is yours, and what doesn't belong to you should not be accepted.
But again the voice of temptation whispered, "He gave it,and how do you know that he did not intend to make you a present of it?Keep it;he will never know it,even if it should be a mistake;he had too many such bills in that great wallet,so it doesn't matter if missing one. " While this conflict was going on in her mind between good and evil, she was hurrying homeward as fast as possible.

1.續(xù)寫詞數(shù)應為150左右;
