1.Why not write in a foreign language? If people feel free to choose their profession, their religion, and even their sex,why not just decide which language you want to write?Ever since Jhumpa Lahiri published In Other Words in Italian, people have been asking me, "Why don't you write in Italian,Tim?After all, you've been in the country 35 years. What keeps you tied to English?" Is it just a question of economic convenience?
Certainly economics can be important. It was the factor that pushed Conrad to abandon his polish mother tongue. If it is not possible to publish at home,or to publish there as one would wish to publish, then one is likely to go elsewhere. And if to publish elsewhere one has to change language, then some authors are willing to take that step.
Something of the same logic has driven many writers from Africa,Asia to write in French and English in recent years. There is also the fact that people in Europe and the West are interested in the countries they grew up in.Just as in the nineteenth century, novelists like Thomas Hardy could "sell" their familiarity with peasant life to a middle-class metropolitan public,so these writers have interested us with stories that might seem common in their home countries.
There is also a real internationalism in the decision to change language. If you have "a message" and if English is the language that offers maximum spread, then it would seem appropriate to use it.
All these make sense.Critics tend to pay attention only to those who have made a success of writing in a new language. In April 2014,an article in the New York Times essentially listed young literary stars who had switched to writing in the main Western languages. At this point, the native English speaker almost begins to feel at a disadvantage for having been born into the dominant culture.Should we perhaps head for Paris, like Beckett or Jonathan Littell, just to be between two worlds?Or look for something more exotic(異國的)and have ourselves translated back into English afterwards? However, one fact is that changing languages doesn't always work.
I did write a novel in Italian. But after rereading it,I decided against it.My work lost power with the switch of language. My real subject matter still had to do with England and it was to my home culture that my books were addressed. The second language never seems to mean quite as much as the first. In any event, after my early experiment, never went back to write in Italian.Changing language is not the only way to bring energy to your writing.

2.Mankind is still evolving(進(jìn)化),according to a recent study by a team of scientists led by a Yale University evolutionary biologist. But research suggests that the natural selection process is no longer driven by survival, perhaps because of differences in women's fertility(能生育性).
The team examined 2,238 women in Framingham,Massachusetts, the US and studied the medical histories of some 14,000 residents since 1948.
They found that strong, slightly fat women tend to have more children. And if this trend were to continue for the next 10 generations,by 2409 the average woman would be 2 cm shorter,1 kg heavier, and have a healthier heart.
That rate of evolution is pretty similar to what we see in plants and animals.Humans don't seem to be any exception, the team said.
Other recent genetic research backs up that belief. One study by John Hawks,an anthropologist at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, found that some 1,800 human gene variations(變異)are common in recent generations because of evolution.Among the changes are mutations(突變)that allow people to digest milk or resist malaria(瘧疾)and others that govern brain development.
Since the Industrial Revolution, modern humans have grown taller and stronger. It's easy to assume that evolution is making humans fitter. But according to anthropologist Peter McAllister, the contemporary male has evolved physically into "the sorriest example of male ever on the planet".An average Neanderthal woman,McAllister notes, could have beaten Arnold Schwarzenegger in an armwrestling(腕力)match. And early Australian Aborigines could easily defeat Usain Bolt in a 100 m dash.
However,Douglas Ewbank,of the University of Pennsylvania, says that cultural factors tend to have a much greater impact than natural selection on future generations,so people tend to ignore evolution's effects.
And,despite evidence indicating evolution still works,Steve Jones,an evolutionary biologist at University College London, thinks that the impact of evolution on humans is not the most important."What makes humans what we are is in our minds,in our society, and not in our evolution," said Jones.
(1)What does the underlined sentence "Humans don't seem to be any exception"imply?
A.Plants and animals are evolving faster than humans.
B.Evolution doesn't work in humans any longer.
C.The rate of evolution in plants and animals also applies to humans.
D.Humans are unique in their evolution.
(2)Why is the recent genetic research quoted in the fifth paragraph?
A.To support the belief that mankind is still evolving.
B.To show human gene variations are common in recent generations.
C.To prove modern humans have grown fitter.
D.To suggest that the natural selection process is no longer driven by survival.
(3)According to the passage,we can infer that Arnold Schwarzenegger
A.used to be a famous actor
B.is an American governor
C.is very weak
D.is very strong
(4)According to Douglas Ewbank, which of the following factors plays a greater part in the future generations?
A.Culture.

4.The hike to the lost Incan city of Choquequirao is one of the most difficult in Peru. From the town of Cachora, which is 161km west of Cusco,it's an 18km walk to Capuliyoc Mountain, then down to Playa Rosalina, where travellers camp for the night.Waking early, travellers then have to cross the Apurímac River and walk uphill to camp close to the ruins. Then, the next morning,it's another 2km walk up to the ruins,3,100 m above sea level. To get back?Well,it's the same way you came.
"I've had people in their 60s and 70s do it," said Juan Barrios,a guide from the Adventure Life company. "But some people come out thinking that because it's only 28km from the drop off they can do it in a day.Six or seven days for the hike is best."
It makes sense, then, that Choquequirao draws only about 30 people a day during the high season(June through August).Compare that to the 2,500 people who arrive each day at the famous Incan city of Machu Picchu.
But for those who make the journey, the rewards(回報)are great:beautiful mountain views at every turn, and the chance to explore the wonderful ruins nearly alone.
Believed to be created around the same time as Machu Picchu,in 1445,Choquequirao is actually larger than better-known Machu Picchu. But very little has been written about Peru's other lost city and researchers are still uncovering new parts of the ruins, leaving life on the mountain relatively untouched.
But officials say that the building of the first cable car(纜車)to Choquequirao will shorten the several-day walk to a 15-minute cable car ride.As a result, the number of travellers that now make the journey each week could turn into 3,000 visitors per day.
Choquequirao is beautiful now because of how untouched it is.Even though the lost city was discovered by Spanish explorer Juan Arias Díaz in 1710,the ruins still make you feel as though you're the first to find them. Will it be the same when more travellers flood in (大量涌入)?
(1)What does the first paragraph centre on?
A.How tall Choquequirao is.
B.How to get to Choquequirao easily.
C.What great views Choquequirao has.
D.How hard the trip to Choquequirao is.
(2)In what way is Choquequirao different from Machu Picchu?
A.Choquequirao is older.
B.Choquequirao is quieter.
C.Choquequirao is smaller.
D.Choquequirao is better known.
(3)How are the ruins of Choquequirao?
A.They're still being dug out.
B.They're in a generally poor condition.
C.They're being renewed at the moment.
D.They've been researched internationally.
(4)What does the author think of Choquequirao in the future?
A.It will be more attractive.
B.It will develop at a slow speed.
C.It won't necessarily take a turn for the better.
D.It won't be more popular than Machu Picchu.組卷:105引用:4難度:0.5

Alan and the other campers sat around the fire, talking and laughing. It would be Alan's first night in a tent, and he was excited and a little nervous.
Then, the conservation area officer spoke, "Much of the wildlife in this region comes out only at night. So after supper, let's start a night watch.Volunteers will take turns to stay down here by the fire, away from the tents. Those who take part will get a chance to see a different world."
"Isn't it dangerous?" someone asked.
"No,it's quite safe," the officer said. "There are no dangerous animals.Any volunteers?"
The kid who'd sat next to Alan on the bus volunteered.
Alan sat still.
Then one of the girls raised her hand.
"If a girl could do it,I could, too," Alan thought. He volunteered.A few more kids raised their hands. Then the officer explained, "This is how it works. When the rest of you go to bed,the first watcher takes his or her place by the fire. The duty of the watcher is to keep the fire going. After thirty minutes,he or she wakes up the next person.Do you still want to volunteer?"
Alan nodded but felt a little nervous.Sleeping in a tent with other campers sounded OK,but the idea of being alone in the dark made him afraid.
The officer showed the order of the watch.
At ten past two in the evening,Alan found himself sitting by the fire,in a great world of darkness. He had never been so afraid.Alan had to turn off his flashlight(手電筒) because he had used it too often. He looked at the stars and the rising moon.It wasn't as dark as he'd thought it would be.He took comfort in that and tried to relax a little.
Looking around,Alan thought he saw a large bird flying down through the air and wondered if it was an owl(貓頭鷹).He had seen small paw prints on the sand by the river.
