1.Most of Earth's freshwater sits underground.Worldwide, about 70 percent of the groundwater drawn to the surface goes for farming. But surface waters-rivers and streams-come from groundwater, too.Drawing too much groundwater over a short time can be harmful.Natural waterways can begin to empty. And that can hurt freshwater ecosystems.Scientists consider this a tipping point when small actions can begin making unusually big differences.
A new study has found that 15 to 21 percent of tapped water(自來水)areas have reached this sort of tipping point. Most of those tapped rivers and streams are in dry areas.Farmers in these areas use groundwater to water their crops. At present drawing rates, the study predicts that 42 to 79 percent of water areas around the world where groundwater is drawn up for use at the surface will reach tipping points by 2050.
A healthy groundwater aquifer(含水層)protects ecosystems against seasonal ups and downs in the use of water. That provides stability for area plants and animals. But if too much groundwater is drawn up from below, surface waters will begin to flow into the aquifer, which can harm what are living in rivers and streams.
De Graaf and the study team set up a computer model. It linked groundwater drawing and water flows within rivers. The model covered fifty years, from 1960 to 2010.Then the researchers used climate forecasts to help the model predict what might happen in future years.Throughout, they kept groundwater drawing rates sustainable.More than half of drawn water areas are likely to cross this ecological tipping point before 2050,the model finds.
"We need to be thinking about this now,not in 10 years," De Graaf says. "Our study shows us where to target more sustainable efforts.

2. Have you ever seen one of the many videos of an elephant catching a paintbrush, putting it in paint, and producing a painting similar to something a 5-year-old could create? While watching an elephant paint is an amazing sight,we can't help but wonder whether the training methods and results reflect animal cruelty.
A 2014 study on four captive (圈養(yǎng)的) Asian elephants at the Melbourne Zoo in Australia was carried out to identify stress-related behaviors around the activity of painting. While the researchers found that the elephants had a neutral (中立的) response to painting — not stressful, nor enriching- it seemed that when an elephant was not selected to paint,it displayed non-interactive behavior. This is seen as a possible signal of stress in the animals.
In addition,PETA,a famous animal rights group, has mentioned several American zoos that use harmful training methods to get elephants to paint, perform tricks, play instruments, and more. That is to say, some zoos that organize elephant painting use assaults to encourage the elephants. However,PETA argues that animal shelters should not force animals to do tricks at all.
Activist organizations warn that elephants can undergo extreme discomfort in the training process.Furthermore, many of the painting elephants are very young,at an age where they should still be with their mothers. It raises questions about whether there's a chance they were caught for the express purpose of performing,or whether they could somehow be restored to a return to the wild.
It is difficult to support any kind of trained behavior that differs greatly from a wild animal's natural tendencies. The role of a shelter is to allow an animal to live as close to its normal life as possible, perhaps with an eye to returning the animal to the wild;teaching them to paint does not seem to go with that target, particularly if it's not a learned behavior that the animal would be willing to do independently.
(1)What is the purpose of the 2014 study?
A.To identify stress-related behaviors when elephants paint.
B.To identify a neutral response to painting.
C.To recognize stress-free behaviors when elephants paint.
D.To recognize elephants' non-interactive painting.
(2)What does the underlined word "assault" in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Persuasions.
B.Benefits.
C.Rewards.
D.Attacks.
(3)Which opinion do activist organizations hold?
A.Elephants should stay with their mother.
B.Elephants may feel uncomfortable in the training.
C.Elephants are caught for the purpose of performing.
D.Elephants ought to be returned to the wild.
(4)What's the role of a shelter?
A.Teaching animals to paint.
B.Permitting animals to perform.
C.Allowing animals to live freely.
D.Training animals to finish the target.組卷:0引用:2難度:0.5 -

4.Gregory Talley used to sleep in a park or under a bridge. The 50-year-old has been homeless for more than 10 years.
"It is hard. It's hard to live homeless. You filled every day trying to find out where you are going to get something to eat.If I hadn't found wonderful Fairfax County Kennedy Shelter,I wouldn't know where I would be by now.I might be dead," Talley said.
The Kennedy Shelter is one of the facilities New Hope Housing provides for homeless people.
Pam Michell has devoted her life to making the lives of this vulnerable(易受傷的) population better as executive director of the non-profit organization.
"I went to Africa in 1985.And I saw a huge amount of poverty, but I saw so much hope. And I decided that I should try to do something that would bring hope to people," Michell said.
When Michell began working with New Hope Housing 25 years ago,its three shelters had about 80 beds. Now,it has 350 beds and serves about 1,500 homeless people every year. She has expanded the program beyond just providing beds for the night.
"We do outreach(拓展),we do prevention,we do permanent housing,we do transitional housing. We have an education program with all sorts of different things to move people to end their homelessness," she said."Our Out of Poverty program is not just about money. It's about you could be spiritually poor, you could be relationship poor ...you could be educationally poor.So it is focusing on how you get out of this poverty that has brought you to being homeless." The program tries to teach the shelter residents self-reliance(自立)and work values, and includes courses on planning and personal responsibility.
"I learned I still have opportunities to change it and I can change it," said shelter resident Lewis Webster. "It is just about going forth in doing necessary work to do it.I mean if you really want better, you would do better and that's the frame of mind of me now."

5.The Spotlight Effect Have you ever felt as if the entire world was watching while you made a mistake?Well, here's some good news:it's likely that no one even noticed.
(1)
The spotlight effect exists because we all get used to seeing things through our own eyes.Every person is the main character in his or her story, and the events of our lives seem to have great importance.(3)
The spotlight effect is a very common part of the human experience. However,in some cases,it can lead to extreme social anxiety and nervousness around other people.Everyone suffers some degree of social anxiety. We all care about what others think, and we all want to be liked. It's normal to wonder about what effect we have on other people.(4)
Learning about the spotlight effect is important because it can help us reduce our anxiety.Next time you feel like everyone is staring at you, remind yourself that it's just your mind playing tricks on you.(5)
A.However, this can be a problem when the anxiety is too much to handle.
B.That's why fewer people notice the embarrassing circumstances they encounter.
C.Another good exercise is to make an effort to notice the people around you, rather than focusing on yourself.
D.The spotlight effect is a trick of the mind that makes us believe that people notice us more often than they really do.
E.What you can do at this moment is to ignore them.
F.We are so busy examining ourselves that we actually observe very little about everyone around us.
G.It can also appear when we score a big goal, ask someone on a date,or do a good deed.組卷:21引用:6難度:0.6

The event that stands out in Tom's memory happened one morning when Tom was only ten years old.He was at home with his elder sister Jane.Tom was doing his homework when he heard raised voices. At first he thought nothing of it since customers in the motorcycle shop directly below their flat often became loud, but he soon realized this time it was different.
"Quick!Quick!Remove the motorcycles from the shop." someone yelled.
Then a thick burning smell filled the air. When Tom opened the front door of their flat to investigate,a thick cloud of smoke greeted him.The motorcycle shop had caught fire and people were running and crying.
Jane, who had been playing the violin in her room, hurried to the living room. They rushed out of the door and along the corridor(走廊)through the smoke.
They were heading towards the stairway at the far end of the corridor when Jane stopped in her track. She turned around and headed back the way they came.Tom had no idea what she was doing, but he followed suit.
Jane had suddenly remembered the lady in her 70s who lived next door to them, who they called Makcik,Malay for auntie.Jane began banging on Makcik's door, but got no answer. As the smoke thickened around them,Tom could see many of their neighbors-some still in their pyjamas-running for safety. The thought of fear crossed his mind.
"She would have run for safety like everyone else!" Tom cried. However,Jane refused to give up. "I know Makcik's still inside." She said she was familiar with Makcik's daily routine and was certain she would still be sleeping. She pounded the door. "Go downstairs.Go now!Go!"
