1.As Simon Kindleysides,34,took his first step in the London Marathon in April,he felt as if magic was in the air.
"As we were walking toward the first mile,we actually started joining all the runners," he said. "Everyone was on the streets, cheering, and that was a magical moment." As time went on,the crowds and other racers spread around.Kindleysides and his team of eight supporters continued walking.
Kindleysides, who is paralyzed(癱瘓的) from the waist down and typically uses a wheelchair, was equipped with an exoskeleton(體外骨骼) to help him walk. His supporters walked with him to change the batteries in his exoskeleton so he could keep moving.
In 2013,Kindleysides was diagnosed with a brain tumor (腫瘤) that was growing in a way that pressed on certain nerves, leading to him losing feeling in his legs.He was told he would never walk again. Before his paralysis, the London-based singer and dancer had "always wanted to run a marathon," he said, but he never made the plan to do so - until this year.
During the London Marathon, the last two miles were the hardest. "At that point,I was exhausted. It was freezing cold, and I was hurting emotionally," Kindleysides said. But he kept going. "I didn't want to let people down.I had a team of eight, and I was raising money for The Brain Tumour Charity," he said. "I didn't want to let them down, myself down, and I thought if I would get this far,I would have to continue." So he continued and made history as the first paralyzed man to complete the London Marathon on foot.
Then, recovering at home,he shared his accomplishment with his three children. "They used to say I'm the only dad in their whole school who's in a wheelchair, and now they say I'm their dad,the only one who has walked a marathon," he said.

2.SHANGHAI(Reuters) - A stampede(踩踏)killed at least 35 people and injured 43 during New Year's Eve celebrations in Shanghai,on the city's popular waterfront tourist attraction known as the Bund(外灘),authorities said.
The Shanghai government said that large crowds started to stampede in Chen Yi Square on the Bund just before midnight, with authorities working to rescue and aid the wounded.
It was not immediately clear what triggered the stampede. The official Xinhua news agency said many of the injured were students.
The government said on its official microblog(微博)that an inquiry had begun, with city leaders rushing to the scene and to hospitals to visit the injured. An emergency meeting would be held to ensure stepped-up safety measures were taken throughout the city.
Photographs on Weibo, the Chinese version of Twitter, showed densely packed crowds of revelers(狂歡者)along the Bund, which is lined with buildings from Shanghai's pre-communist period on the bank of the Huangpu River.
In some photographs, rescue workers were seen trying to resuscitate victims lying on the pavement while ambulances waited nearby.
Authorities had shown some concern about crowd control in the days leading up to New Year's Eve.They recently canceled an annual 3 D laser show on the Bund that last year attracted as many as 300,000 people.
At dawn on Thursday, there were still small crowds of revelers trying to find taxis home and workers were clearing up trash strewn around the Bund. There was little sign of the mayhem that had broken out just hours earlier.

3.Modern day robots may not be as entertaining as R2 D2 or the robot from Lost in Space, but robots are very important to space exploration and are being used in a variety of different ways for several important reasons.
Robots make great explorers on planets, the moon, and other landing areas.Aside from the earth, just about every surface in the solar system is unsafe for humans to explore. The air on most other planets is insufficient for humans to breathe, making it necessary to wear a space suit and oxygen equipment. The temperatures on these surfaces are much too hot or much too cold for any humans to withstand.Plus there would be complications with radiation, weather, and a lack of gravity.Robots have much less limitation in these areas and can survive much longer under these conditions.
Robots are designed for collecting scientific data.Robots are also able to perform many tasks at one time and can process information much quicker and more efficiently.Important scientific projects from detecting minerals, analyzing ground samples,to finding water are all performed much quicker and accurately by robots.
The use of robots has made the cost of space exploration much less expensive than it would cost for humans to do the work.In order to successfully send humans into space we would need to build a vehicle that can not only carry humans, but also enough food and water to keep them alive for the duration of the trip. Moreover, robots have no problems working for hours on end.Robots never complain, they don't require food or water, and they never need a bathroom break.
Over the past 30 years or so there have been many different types of robots used successfully in the exploration of space.Perhaps the most famous and successful robots are Spirit and Opportunity who have both been exploring the surface of Mars. They have both been very successful with experiments on soil and rocks and have even found evidence of water in Mars' history.
(1)Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A.The Development of Robots
B.The Discovery of Space Exploration
C.No Robots,No Space Exploration
D.Robots Are Used in Space Exploration
(2)According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?
A.The use of robots in space exploration costs more than the use of humans.
B.It is dangerous for humans to explore other surfaces in the solar system except the earth.
C.Both Spirit and Opportunity have found the evidence of water on Mars.
D.Many different types of robots have explored the space successfully.

A.remain
B.bear
C.defeat
D.develop
(4)What is the writer's attitude in this passage?

4.The Trans-Siberian Railway is a single train line that crosses nearly the complete length of Russia, from Moscow to Vladivostok. It covers a total of 5,772 miles, running from Europe to Asia.Unlike the longest flight in the world, which just began transporting passengers in 2018,the Trans-Siberian Railway started its business in 1916.
Anyone who has taken this long journey,or even just part of it,will tell you that it travels at a rather slow speed, passing through some amazing, remote areas of Russia. You don't have to make the full journey without stopping.Instead, you're recommended to get off where there are attractive views, since it stops in some pretty fantastic places. But you certainly can take the full journey non-stop.If you do,the trip will take about 144 hours-six full days!
You can book tickets with travel agencies. You can also make the booking online and tickets will be sent to your hotel or personal address.Children under 4 years old accompanied by adults can travel free, but cannot take up a seat.A child ticket needs to be bought if you want to get a seat for the child.
There are longer railway services in the transportation world, but only one of them is a passenger line as some longer routes transport goods, not travellers. This railway may not be the fastest or the most modern, but it's clearly still an important player in the transportation world!
(1)Why is the longest flight mentioned in the first paragraph?
A.To compare the two different ways of transport.
B.To state the Trans-Siberian Railway is out of date.
C.To explain how long the Trans-Siberian Railway covers.
D.To show the great history of the Trans-Siberian Railway.
(2)Which of the following statements about the Trans-Siberian Railway is TRUE?
A.A non-stop journey is suggested.
B.It takes six full days to finish a non-stop trip.
C.Children are always free of charge on this trip.
D.It is the longest railway in the transportation world.
(3)Where does this passage probably come from?
A.A history textbook.
B.A science fiction.
C.A business journal.
D.A travel magazine.組卷:4引用:1難度:0.5

You still need a better reason to plant a tree?
Police aren't cheap and neither are lawyers, judges, and all the other layers that make up the justice system. But trees and some grass,in comparison, are a real bargain, and they prove to be effective in fighting crimes.
Many cities used to launch programs to plant vegetation along roadways to help absorb rainwater. After tracking 14 types of crime in nearby areas,Michelle Kondo,a social scientist found that a variety of crimes including property crimes such as theft and burglary, and violent crimes such as armed fights and mayhem in those areas decreased to 27 percent,a stunning 18 percent fall.Kondo believed the appearance of city trucks and vans in the landscaped areas-for planting and maintenance-was enough to scare away potential criminals.
Kondo's study also worked on the link between grassland care and decrease of the crime in downtown areas. It's tempting to use income as the connection. After all,if you have the crime and money to water your lawn, you probably live in a neighborhood that sees less crime. But actually, people are less likely to hang in those areas where the streets are maintained or cleaned. "You will see less kids hanging on the corners," Kondo said.He argued that caution of the local people implied by the organized greenery helped to frighten away ill-intentioned guys,by announcing to would-be criminals that there are "eyes on the street" that care for their neighborhood and would be more likely to report a crime.
We already know greenery is beautiful to look at and can help improve mood and health while reducing pollution. Now we can add crime-fighting to the list of vegetation's many benefits. Therefore, are you ready to plant a tree?組卷:11引用:1難度:0.5
