  • 11.    People who have kids live longer than those who remain childless,an academic study has suggested.Researchers believe it is because adults' immune systems are "refreshed" when kids go to nursery and start picking up infections(感染).
During the course of someone's life, their immune system can become weaker. But when kids start bringing infections home, their parents' immune systems get a workout.Non-parents — unless they are teachers or nurses perhaps — do not get the same exposure to infection.
Writing in the journal Scientific Reports,Miguel Portela said parents had less risk of dying from infection than non-parents and if they did,it was about five years later. He said that "a parent's immune system is refreshed by a child's infections at a time when their own protection starts wearing thin." He added, "With this improved immune system(免疫系統(tǒng)),the parent has a better chance to defend whatever infections that might strike when old and weak and parenthood is rewarded in individual terms through an improved immunization against infections." Naturally there are other reasons why some people live longer than others, but they may not be comparable with becoming a parent. The academics say that high income and house ownership are always associated with higher survival but less so than having children.
Mr.Portela admits the research is far from complete, saying that while the results "record a relationship between the presence of children and death rate, the specific transmission mechanisms remain unclear. He admits the presence of other, perhaps behavioral factors in parents which result in changed death rate compared to individuals without children." He adds, "While the relationships of lifestyle choices such as smoking, obesity, drinking and other behavioral factors with life expectancy and causes of death are well studied and understood, the same cannot be said for the individual decision to become a parent".

(1)Why did Mr.Portela say "parents had less risk of dying from infection than non-parents"?

    A.Parents have healthier lifestyles.
B.Parents have less exposure to infection.
C.Parents have higher ability to fight against infections.
D.Parents have less experience to fight against infections.
(2)How are parents protected against infections?

A.By being exposed to their kids' infection.
B.By working out with their kids.
    C.By refreshing their kids' life.
    D.By strengthening their kids' infection.
(3)What can we infer from the research?

A.Rich life benefits parents more than having children.
B.Lack of sleep has nothing to do with life expectancy.
C.The presence of children can improve parents' health.
D.Behavioral factors contribute to higher death rate than having no children.
(4)What's the best title for the passage?

    A.Parents and Non-parents
B.How to Achieve Longer Life Expectancy
C.How Is Parents' Immune Systems Changed
D.Children's Effect on Parents' Immune System

  • 12.A shop owner placed a sign above his door that said, "Puppies for Sale." Signs like this always have a way of attracting young children, and to no surprise,a boy saw the sign and approached the owner. "How much are you going to sell the puppies for?" he asked.
The store owner replied, "Anywhere from $30 to $50." The little boy pulled out some change from his pocket. "I have $2.37," he said. "Can I please look at them?"
The shop owner smiled and whistled.Out of the doghouse came Lady, who ran down the aisle of his shop followed by five teeny, tiny balls of fur.
One puppy was lagging considerably behind.Immediately the little boy singled out the lagging, limping puppy and said, "What's wrong with that little dog?"
The shop owner explained that the vet had examined the little puppy and had discovered it didn't have a hip socket(膝蓋骨).It would always be lame.
The little boy became excited. "That is the puppy that I want to buy." The shop owner said, "No,you don't want to buy that little dog.If you really want him,I'll just give him to you."
The little boy got quite upset. He looked straight into the store owner's eyes, pointing his finger, and said, "I don't want you to give him to me.That little dog is worth every bit as much as all the other dogs and I'll pay full price. In fact,I'll give you $2.37 now,and 50 cents a month until I have him paid for."
The shop owner countered,"You really don't want to buy this little dog.He is never going to be able to run and jump and play with you like the other puppies."
To his surprise, the little boy reached down and rolled up his pant leg to reveal a badly twisted, crippled left leg supported by a big metal brace. He looked up at the shop owner and softly replied, "Well,I don't run so well myself, and the little puppy will need someone who understands!"

(1)According to the first three paragraphs,we can infer that
    .
    A.children pay attention to prices
B.the shop owner didn't believe the boy
C.children have deep love for puppies

A.At least five and a half years.
    B.Less than twelve months.
C.About six months and twenty days.
D.About four years and three quarters.
(4)What does the underlined word mean in the last but one paragraph?

    D.a(chǎn)rgued.

  • 13.Located in Pisa, the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy has become the sign of Italy. It is the third oldest structure in Pisa's Cathedral Square. There are eight floors in the Leaning Tower of Pisa including the observation deck at the top.The weight of the tower is about 14,500 metric tons. There are amazing facts of the Leaning Tower of Pisa that we will mention here.
The Leaning Tower of Pisa was not originally intended to lean, but because it was built on soft soils the tower gradually leaned to one side.Prior to its restoration (修復(fù)) from 1990 to 2001,the tower had a tilt (傾斜) of 5.5 degrees. Many people think that it will fall one day.Millions of tourists come to the lawns around the tower to take the classic photo pretending to hold up or knock down the tower.
It is said that you must visit the Leaning Tower of Pisa during the day.At night the shops are closed and it appears unimpressive. But,if you plan to visit on a full moon night, the tower will look charming.Mornings are the best time to beat the crowds.Summer in Pisa is very hot and wet,but you can expect rain in fall and winter.
Even though some people regard the tower as an engineering failure owing to the tilt, the tower has acquired a special place in history. The tower has also been used for experiments by the famous Italian scientist named Galileo Galilei. He is believed to have thrown two balls of different mass from the tower to prove that their falling time is not related to their mass.

When Jack was a kid,he and his family left Britain and moved to a foreign country.Although his family was poor,he became a very excellent engineer after college. He knew a lot about the train. For example,he knew that when a fast-moving train's speed has a sudden change,it's probably because the track is broken at some distance.
After college,Jack gained a teaching job in a British university. So one summer day he left for Britain by ship.Being poor,he wore worn-out clothes, which were even a little messy. But he didn't care about it at all. When he landed on the British shore,he took a train to the city where the university was.On the train,he found other passengers were all rich gentlemen, who wore nice suits and shoes. And he could see all of them were not friendly to him.
After the train started, they began making fun of him. They were angry, unsatisfied with the train guard who allowed him to get on the train with them. Some even wanted to pull the alarm to stop the train.
However, all of this didn't have an effect on Jack.He was sitting there calmly, focusing on the train's condition, including its speed and sound produced by the wheels running on the track. Each time he took a train,he'd pay attention to the train's sound, speed, etc.By doing so,he could feel the train and the track and check whether the train had any possible danger.
That day, when the train was already running at a high speed, the gentlemen still continued to show their unfriendly behaviors to Jack. But Jack remained calm and still focused on the train's running. One hour later,he found there was a sudden change in the train's speed. After further feeling the train's condition,he could decide the track was 100% broken at some distance.
