  • 11.    Do you ever get the feeling that you are being watched?Well, you might be right.According to a study published in Nature on June 23,astronomers have found that 1,715 stars have had a direct view of Earth since humans have been here.
In order to do this, scientists used a previous (先前的) method that looked for aliens (外星人).But instead, they changed the method so it could try to determine what places could see us.
The team looked at 331,312 stars within 326 light-years of Earth, with each light-year equalling 9.4 trillion kilometers.Out of all those stars, only 1,715 of them could see Earth within the last 5,000 years.
"When I look up at the sky,it looks a little bit friendlier because it's like somebody is waving,"said Lisa Kaltenegger, director of the Carl Sagan Institute at Cornell University,US,and the study's lead writer.
If a planet circling around one of those 1,715 stars is home to advanced life, they could easily see that there is life here because of the oxygen (氧氣) on Earth. If that didn't give it away, then the radio waves we have sent out into space would also be an indicator (提示物).In fact,human-made radio waves have already traveled through 75 of the closest stars on Kaltenegger's list.
Why haven't we heard from anyone yet, then?
It takes a long time for messages to travel between star systems.By the time a message could be received, that advanced civilization would probably be not there anymore.
Alan Boss,a scientist at the Carnegie Institution for Science in the US who wasn't part of the study, wrote in an email that this long time would limit the chances for different life to exchange "emails and TIKTOK videos".
"So we should not expect aliens to show up anytime soon." Boss said.

(1)Why did scientists change the research method?

A.To get in contact with aliens.
B.To count the stars in outer space.
C.To decide what places could view Earth.
D.To measure the stars within light-years of Earth.
(2)What does the underlined word "that" in paragraph 5 refer to?

    A.Advanced life.
    B.The oxygen on Earth.
    C.Human-made radio waves.
D.A planet circling around one of those 1,715 stars.
(3)What could prevent humans exchanges with aliens according to Boss?

    A.There are no aliens.
    B.They cannot understand each other.
C.It takes long for messages to travel.
D.Human-made radio waves cannot travel far.
(4)What is the purpose of the text?

A.To explain how messages travel between different stars.
B.To discuss if there is advanced life on other stars.
C.To raise readers' interest in aliens.
D.To present new findings published in a study.

  • 13.The government's top Great Barrier Reef scientist says a third mass coral bleaching(珊瑚白化)event in five years is a clear signal that the marine wonder is "calling for urgent help on climate change".Corals can recover from mild bleaching, but severe bleaching can kill corals.
Prof Terry Hughes, director of the Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies at James Cook University, surveyed 1,036 reefs from a plane over nine days in late March.
The marine park authority also had an observer on the flights. The survey has released maps showing that serious levels of bleaching occurred in 2020 in all three sections of the reef northern, central and southern. Some 25% of the reefs were seriously bleached-meaning that more than 60% of the corals on each reef had bleached.
The Great Barrier Reel has experienced five mass bleaching events-1998.2002,2016,2017 and 2020 -all caused by rising ocean temperatures driven by global heating.Hughes said there probably would not be the same level of coral death in the north and central regions in 2020 as in previous years, but this was partly because previous bleaching outbreaks had kill off the less heat -tolerant species The 2020 bleaching was second only to 2016 for severity(嚴(yán)重性),Hughes said.
Dr.David Wachenfeld, chief scientist at the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority told Guardian Australia, "My greatest fear is that people will lose hope for the reef.Without hope there's no action.People need to see these bleaching events. They are clear signals that the Great Barrier Reef is calling for urgent help and for us to do everything we can".
Measures to improve the ability of recovery of the reef include improving water quality, controlling outbreaks of coral-eating starfish, and research and development to improve the heat tolerance of corals. "However, climate change brings a new scale of impact unlike anything we have seen before. Thus, dealing with the climate problem is the basis for everything else to work, " Wachenfeld said.

  • 14.At 1,345 meters above sea level,Ben Nevis is definitely not the world's most difficult mountain to climb. But things get considerably tricky if instead of hiking shoes you put on a pair of 5-inch high heels, especially if you're a guy.One English teenager recently proved that it was not impossible.
Ben Conway,a 19-year-old art student from London, recently took up the challenge as a way to stand out in an application for a scholarship for the School of Communication Arts in Brixton. He started his unusual high-heel climb at 8 a.m.,on June 27,and was joined by Callum MacKenzie Allen,a friend from his art foundation year, who videotaped the whole thing for a two-minute video that served as his application project. The whole climb took five hours and wasn't the smoothest experience.
Halfway up Ben Navis, one of his shoes broke,so he had to tape the shoes to his feet to make sure they stayed on.The weather didn't make it easy for him either,as he claimed that it rained pretty much the whole time, and he had to go against 40 to 50 miles an hour winds.Due to these difficult conditions,Ben and his friend had to turn back after reaching 900 meters up the mountain.
Apart from providing a unique art school application project, the high-heel climb also allowed the 19-year-old to raise some money for worthy causes, like Sal's Shoes, which provides footwear for barefoot children around the world.
"Raising money for charity brings happiness to people's lives and if I can do something ridiculous and bring someone happiness, then that's what it's all about",Ben said.

    B.To record a special experience.
    C.To promote their friendship.
    D.To assist in Ben's application.
(3)What does Paragraph 3 focus on?

    A.The difficulties in the climb.

Nicholas Epley,a behavioural scientist, and I conducted a series of studies and concluded that kind act s as simple as buying a cup of coffee for someone can promote a person's happiness.Everyday life affords many opportunities for such actions, yet people do not always catch them. (1)

We firstly studied acts of kindness done for familiar people such as friends, classmates or family. (2)
For instance,in one experiment, people wrote notes to friends and family "just because".In another, they gave cupcakes away to workmates.Across these experiments,we asked both the person performing a kind act and the one receiving it to fill out questionnaires (問卷).
Across our studies, several strong patterns appeared. For one, both performers and receivers of the acts of kindness were in more positive moods than normal after these kind acts.(3)
The receivers felt significantly better than the kind actors expected. The receivers also reliably rated these acts as"bigger"than the people performing them did.
        (4)
In one experiment, participants at an ice-skating rink (溜冰場) in a public park gave away hot chocolate to people they didn't know on a cold winter day.Again, the experience was more positive than the performers expected for the receivers.Although the people giving out the hot chocolate saw the act as relatively small,it really mattered to the receivers.
These findings suggest that what might seem small when we are deciding whether or not to do something nice for someone else could matter a great deal to the person we do it for. These warm acts can improve our own emotional health and brighten the day of another person.(5)

A.So why not choose kindness when we can?
B.For another,it was clear that performers undervalued their impacts.
C.From one situation to the next, the specific acts of kindness differed.
D.We found that participants didn't realize their positive impacts on strangers as well.
E.Our research also revealed one reason why people may not realize their actions' impacts.
F.We compared the performers' expectation of the receivers' moods with their actual experiences.
G.It is because people performing kind acts undervalue how much receivers value their behaviour.

Kayla slept in the next morning.Saturday was her favorite day of the week.It rained most of the day,so Kayla enjoyed playing video games inside. On Sunday, her friends came over and they played basketball for several hours. Then it was Labor Day,you know, the extra day off that Kayla was so looking forward to.But Kayla was awakened early that morning by her dad.He told Kayla that in celebration of Labor Day,the family would do some labour work.Kayla couldn't believe it.This was a holiday!A day when she was supposed to be enjoying freshly squeezed lemonade while playing in her tree house. As Kayla wiped her eyes, she began to wonder if this was just a bad dream.
Kayla, your breakfast is ready. We have a lot of work to do today.Let's get a move on," said Kayla's mom.As she sat down at the kitchen table,Kayla asked her parents,Are you serious about working today?Isn't Labor Day a holiday?"
"Yes,Kayla. It is." replied her dad. "But we thought working hard today would make you understand why Labor Day was observed initially." Though feeling disappointed and even a little annoyed,Kayla had no choice.
