第二部分 閱讀 第一節(jié) 閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的A、B、C、D四個(gè)選項(xiàng)中選出最佳選項(xiàng)。

  • 11.The idea of turning recycled plastic bottles into clothing is not new.During the last five years,a large number of clothing companies, businesses and environmental organizations have started turning plastics into fabric to deal with plastic pollution. But there's a problem with this method.Research now shows that microfibers could be the biggest source of plastic in the sea.
Dr.Mark Browne in Santa Barbara,California, has been studying plastic pollution and microfibers for 10 years now.He explains that every time synthetic(合成的) clothes go into a washing machine,a large number of plastic fibers fall off. Most washing machines can't collect these microfibers. So every time the water gets out of a washing machine, microfibers are entering the sewers and finally end up in the sea.
In 2011,Browne wrote a paper stating that a single piece of synthetic clothing can produce more than 1,900 fibers per wash.Browne collected samples from seawater and freshwater sites around the world, and used a special way to examine each sample. He discovered that every single water sample contained microfibers.
This is bad news for a number of reasons.Plastic can cause harm to sea life when eaten.Studies have also shown that plastic can absorb other pollutants.
Based on this evidence,it may seem surprising that companies and organizations have chosen to turn plastic waste into clothing as an environmental "solution".Even though the science has been around for a while,Browne explains that he's had a difficult time getting companies to listen. When he asked well-known clothing companies to support Benign by Design, his research project that seeks to get clothes that have a bad effect on humans and the environment out of the market,Browne didn't get a satisfying answer.Only one women's clothing company,Eileen Fisher, offered Browne funding.

(1)What has happened during the past five years?

    A.Fabric has become much stronger.
B.Plastic pollution has been less serious.
    C.Many plastics have been reused.
    D.Microfibers have been greatly improved.
(2)What does Browne think of washing synthetic clothes?

A.It is adding microfibers to the clothes.
    B.It is worsening environmental problems.
C.It is making synthetic clothes last longer.
D.It is doing great damage to washing machines.
(3)What can be inferred about Browne's Benign by Design research project?

    A.It has achieved great success.
    B.It hasn't got anything done.
C.It is known to very few people.
    D.It is facing some difficulty.
(4)What's the best title for the text?

A.It's Important to Learn to Recycle
    B.Recycled Plastic Clothing:Solution or Pollution?
C.It's Never Easy to Solve Pollution Problems
D.Are Human Beings Moving Forward or Backward?

  • 12.There is an old joke among pilots that says the ideal flight crew is a computer,a pilot and a dog.The computer's job is to fly the plane. The pilot is there to feed the dog.And the dog's job is to bite the pilot if he tries to touch the computer.
Handing complex tasks to computers is not new.But recent progress in machine learning,a subfield of artificial intelligence (AI),has enabled computers to handle many problems which were previously beyond jye.aim.The result has been an AI boom, with computers moving into everything from medical diagnosis and insurance to self-driving cars.
There is a problem, though.Machine learning works by giving computers the ability to train themselves, which adapts their programming to the task at hand.People struggle to understand exactly how those self-written programs do what they do.When algorithms(計(jì)算機(jī)程序)are doing small tasks, such as playing chess or recommending a film to watch, this "black box" problem can be safely ignored. When they are deciding who gets a loan,or how to drive a car through a crowded city,it is potentially harmful. And when things go wrong, then customers, regulators and the courts will want to know why.
For some people this is a reason to hold back AL France's digital-economy minister,Mounir Mahjoubi, has said that the government should not use any algorithm whose decisions cannot be explained. But that is an overreaction. The difficulties caused by clever computers are not unheard- of.Society already has plenty of experience dealing with problematic black boxes;the most common are called human beings, who can't even figure out what's going on in a brajye.ai.In response to the weakness in humans, society has evolved a series of workable coping mechanisms, called laws, rules and regulations. Many of these can be applied to machines as well.
Humans have worked with computers on complex tasks for decades. One lesson from such applications is that, wherever possible, people should supervise(監(jiān)督)the machjye.aies.In that joke, pilots are vital in case something happens that is beyond the scope of artificial intelligence. As computers spread, companies and governments should ensure the first line of defence is a real person who can overrule the algorithms if necessary.

(1)Why is the joke mentioned in Paragraph 1?

    A.To make people laugh.
    B.To foresee future aeroplane industry.
C.To introduce the latest model of aeroplanes.
D.To raise people's awareness of computers performing complex tasks.
(2)What has caused the increasing application of computers in various fields?

    A.The shortage of labor force.
    B.The rise of artificial intelligence.
    C.The encouragement of government.
    D.The development of medical economy.
(3)Why are some people opposed to AI?

    A.Black boxes always go wrong.
    B.Laws forbid machine learning.
C.They don't understand how AI works.
D.Computers are trying to replace human beings.

  • 13.World's Largest Active Volcano Erupts in Hawaii Hawaii's Mauna Loa,the largest active volcano in the world, has erupted for the first time in nearly 40 years,US authorities said, erupting lava and ash Monday,Nov.28th,2022 as emergency crews went on alert.
Flows of lava remained mostly contained within the peak's huge caldera, but the eruption could pose a threat to nearby residents if conditions change, the United States Geological Survey reported at 11:45 pm local time Sunday about 15 minutes after the eruption inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
Mauna Loa has been showing signs of erupting for years, according to the USGS,which said the ongoing eruption was visible from Kona,a town on the west coast of Hawaii's main island about 72 kilometers from the volcano.
"Lava is still erupting from the peak and is overflowing from the caldera," the USGS said on its website, referring to the basin at the top of a volcano. While it added there were "no threats to populated areas currently," it urged area residents to review preparation procedures.
Hawaii authorities said no evacuation(撤離,疏散) orders have been given, although the peak area and several roads in the region were closed, and two shelters have been opened.
Robin George Andrews,a scientist, said a larger threat exists if lava begins to pour out of so-called rift zones(裂谷帶).
While there is no evidence yet of this occurring now on Mauna Loa, "the fact that it is a dangerous mountain that hasn't erupted since 1984— the longest eruptive pause in its recorded history— is why we should all keep an eye on it," Andrews said.
One of six active volcanoes on the Hawaiian islands,Mauna Loa has erupted 33 times since 1843,according to USGS.
The most recent eruption,in 1984,lasted 22 days and produced lava flows which reached to within about 7 kilometers of Hilo,a city to the northeast which is home to about 44,000 people today.

(1)Which of the following statements would USGS agree with?

A.The eruption time is correctly predicted.
    B.The eruption is within expectation.
C.The eruption results have been under control.
D.The eruption will pose a threat to people living nearby.
(2)What suggestion is given to residents in paragraph 4?

A.Leaving their houses as soon as possible.
B.Putting up more shelters in a short time.
    C.Listening to evacuation orders often.
    D.Making some preparations.
(3)According to Robin George Andrews, what's the potential danger?

A.No one knows how to judge the eruptive pause.
B.There are more people living near the rift zones.
C.There is a possibility that the lava pours out of rift zones.
D.All the six active volcanoes on the Hawaiian islands will erupt.
(4)Why does the author write this passage?

A.To give advice about protecting the environment.
B.To stress the importance of natural's power.
C.To tell a piece of news to the readers.
D.To introduce the history of volcanos.

  • 19.閱讀下面短文,根據(jù)所給情節(jié)進(jìn)行續(xù)寫,使之構(gòu)成一個(gè)完整的故事。
I was taking a trip from Texas to the Bahamas for a vacation, having prepared for this trip for a long time. After packing all my belongings and heading to the airport,I could only think about all the pleasant times I would have at the tropical(熱帶)island.I already had everything planned out, first I would go diving, then visit the queen's stairs, and eventually go swimming with the dolphins. The thoughts made my heart race;I could even smell the fresh ocean breeze right now.
Finally,I made it into the airport, just in time to make my flight. As I boarded the plane,I had a smile stretched along my face.I slid right into my seat, sitting mid row right in the middle of two other passengers. One of them was a fairly attractive young female and the other was an elderly lady who looked to be in her 70s.Her hair was as gray as a thunderstorm cloud and the wrinkles on her skin matched the ones on my shirt.
"We should depart in about five minutes," The pilot responded. At that time,I had no idea what was soon incoming after this announcement.I used to fly with my mom a whole bunch of times as a kid,the people beside me seeming to be taking it well as well.
I went to sleep and woke up to various screaming and yelling on the plane;everything was so chaotic that it looked straight out of a movie scene. The lights in the airplane started flickering(閃爍),and I could feel the bumps the plane was making. Was I still dreaming?I looked to my left and the seat was empty!Sweat started to run down my face. The young female was gone!
"Mommy!" A little girl screamed.I couldn't control it anymore and tears started rolling down my face. The plane shook more, seeming the end was nearing.
"Ladies and gentlemen,we are experiencing an extreme clear air turbulence(亂流)," the pilot explained. "The plane is being adjusted. Please remain seated."
