11.A friend of mine,in response to a conversation we were having about the injustices of life, asked me the question, "Who said life was going to be fair,or that it was even meant to be fair?" Her question was a good one.It reminded me of something I was taught as a youngster:life isn't fair. It's a disappointment, but it's absolutely true. One of the mistakes many of us make is that we feel sorry for ourselves,or for others, thinking that life should be fair,or that someday it will be.It's not and it won't be.
One of the nice things about surrendering(屈從)to the fact that life isn't fair is that it keeps us from feeling sorry for ourselves by encouraging us to do the very best we can with what we have.We know it's not "life's job" to make everything perfect,it's our own challenge.Surrendering to this fact also keeps us from feeling sorry for others because we are reminded that everyone is dealt in different hand;everyone has unique strengths and problems in the process of growing up,facing the reality and making decisions;and everyone has those times that they feel unfairly treated.
The fact that life isn't fair doesn't mean we shouldn't do everything in our power to improve our own lives or the world as a whole. To the contrary,it suggests that we should. When we don't recognize or admit that life isn't fair,we tend to feel pity for others and for ourselves.Pity,of course,is a self-defeating emotion that does nothing for anyone, except to make everyone feel worse than they already do.When we do recognize that life isn't fair, however,we feel sympathy for others and for ourselves. And sympathy is a heartfelt emotion that delivers loving-kindness to everyone it touches. The next time you find yourself thinking about the injustices of the world, try reminding yourself of this very basic fact. You may be surprised that it can make you out of self-pity and into helpful action.
(1)The writer may agree with the fact that
A.life is meant to be fair
B.people feel sorry only for ourselves
C.life isn't fair
D.someday life will be fair
(2)What makes everything perfect?
A.Our own challenge.
B.Unique strengths.
C.Unfair treatment.
D.Our duty.
(3)Facing the fact, people are advised to
A.feel pity for others and for themselves
B.make brave decisions
C.do everything in their power to improve their lives
D.give up their unique strengths
(4)In the last paragraph, the underlined word "it" refers to
A.justices of the world
B.this very basic fact
C.loving-kindness
D.self-defeating emotion組卷:0引用:1難度:0.5 -
12.The British are known for their sense of humor. However,it is often difficult for foreigners to understand their jokes. The main point to remember is that the British often use understatement.
Understatement means saying less than you think or feel. For example,if someone gets very wet in a shower of rain,he might say, "It's a little damp outside." Or,if someone is very impolite and shouts at another person, someone else might say, "She isn't exactly friendly." Understatement is often used in unpleasant situation or to make another person look silly.Understatement plays an important part in British humor.
Another key to understanding British humor is that the British like to make fun of themselves as well as others. They often laugh about the silly and unpleasant things that happen to our everyday life when someone accidentally falls over in the street. They also like to make jokes about people from different classes of society. They like to make jokes about their accents, the way they dress and the way they behave. What's more, the British love to watch comedies about people who do not know how to behave in society. The comedies series Mr.Bean is a good example of this kind of humor.
Mr.Bean is the character created by British actor Rowan Atkinson in 1990.Mr.Bean doesn't talk often, and instead he uses his body movement and facial expressions to make people laugh.Perhaps what makes Mr.Bean so funny is that he does things that adults in the real world cannot do.Mr.Bean is popular in many countries around the world because you do not have to speak English to understand the humor.Because of this, many people have become familiar with the British sense of humor.
(1)Why is it difficult for foreigners to understand British jokes?
A.The British often use overstatement.
B.The British try to understate something.
C.British jokes are not as funny as jokes in other countries.
D.British jokes are connected with many different cultures.
(2)The author explains understatement by
A.describing a process
B.making comparisons
C.following time order
D.using examples
(3)Mr.Bean makes others laugh by
A.using his body movement and facial expressions
B.making jokes about others' accent
C.copying how others behave
D.telling funny stories
(4)What can be the best title for the text?
A.British Humor in Comedy
B.Humor in Different Cultures
C.Understanding British Humor
D.Developing Your Sense of Humor組卷:5引用:3難度:0.5 -
13.Cheating (作弊) can happen in a lot of different ways. When people cheat,it's not fair to other people, like the kids who studied for the test or who the true winners of a game were.
Many people like the action of cheatjye.aig.In their opinion,it makes difficult things seem easy, like getting all the right answers on the test. But it doesn't solve the problem of not knowing the material and it won't help on the next test —— unless the person cheats again.
Some people lose respect for cheaters and think less of jye.aim.The cheaters themselves may feel bad because they know they shouldn't get that good grade. And,if they get caught cheating, they will be in trouble at school, and maybe at home, too.
Some kids cheat because they're busy or lazy and they want to get good grades without spending the time studying.Other kids might feel like they can't pass the test without cheating.Even when there seems to be a "good reason" for cheating, cheating isn't a good idea.
If you were sick or upset about something the night before the day and couldn't study,it would be better to talk with the teacher about this. And if you don't have enough time to study for a test because of swim practice, you need to talk with your parents about how to balance swimming and school.A kid who thinks cheating is the only way to pass a test needs to talk with the teacher and his or her parents so they can find some solutions together.Talking about these problems and working them out will make them feel better than cheating.
(1)The author thinks that when kids cheat in class,
A.it is unfair to other people
B.it does harm to their health
C.teachers should punish them
D.teachers shouldn't stop them at once
(2)Many people like cheating because they think
A.the material in the test is very difficult
B.they want to do better than the others
C.cheating can make hard things seem very easy
D.they have little time to study their lessons
(3)The fourth paragraph mainly tells us
A.some kids can't pass the test without cheating
B.why kids cheat in the test
C.cheating isn't a good idea
D.some kids don't spend the time studying
(4)We can learn from the passage that
A.cheaters are often thought highly of
B.people show no respect for those who cheat
C.parents whose kids cheat are often in trouble
D.kids cheat in the test because of swim practice組卷:0引用:2難度:0.7

14.How to Protect Yourself from Hackers Online An increase in cyber-attacks (網(wǎng)絡(luò)攻擊) makes the Internet seem like a scary place these days. How can individuals protect or make it more difficult for hackers to access their information? Here are several tips that can help you protect against cyber-attacks:
(1)
Hard passwords include upper and lower case letters, numbers and special characters. They should be at least eight characters in length. They should also not spell out words easy for hackers to find, like your pet's name or the name of a family member.
Change your password regularly
A very common mistake made by users is to create one hard password, but then never change it.Remembering a long list of complicated passwords can be difficult. But no password is unbreakable.Hackers are better able to hack multiple accounts if those accounts all have the same password.A password management service, like Dashlane or PasswordBox,can help you keep track of hard passwords.(2)
Clear your browser (瀏覽器) history
This goes for all the devices you use in a day-your home computer, your work computer,or your friend's iPad.Internet browsers like Firefox or Chrome keep track of where you've been and what you've done online. They keep records of every site you visited.(3)
Do not use free Wi-Fi
(4)
Use anti-virus protection
There are many anti-virus services available for users.(5)
A.Be careful while using thumb drive.
B.These services permit users to easily store and secure their passwords.
C.Make your password harder to hack.
D.They can offer many different types of computer protection.

Last week,we had an important match against another school. The other team was super.I was determined to win,but Matthew was playing badly. He could not keep pace with the game, and as a result of his careless playing,we lost.
Afterwards,I got really angry with him,and I told him I thought he was not trying hard enough.
He got annoyed, saying it wasn't his fault even if he couldn't play as well as me,and that I shouldn't talk to him in this manner. Then we both started shouting at each other and it turned into a horrible argument.
Since we argued,he hasn't spoken to me even though we sit next to each other in class. It's really awkward. He is usually cheerful and outgoing, but he has been really quiet and looks sad.The things he said hurt me too,but he has not apologized to me.
