  • 11.In recent years,Ethiopia has become a regional leader in solid waste management.Last year, the country transformed the landfill(垃圾填埋場)in Addis Ababa into a new waste-to-energy plant, the first such project on the continent. The plant incinerates up to 1,400 tonnes of waste every day, about 80 percent of the city's rubbish, supplying the capital with 25 percent of its household electricity needs.
However, despite these important steps, challenges remain in Ethiopia.Although the country has permitted the Basel,Stockholm and Rotterdam conventions, laws and policies for environmentally sound management of hazardous(有害的)wastes are still not effective in pre- venting littering waste illegally.
To help Ethiopia meet these challenges, the Chemicals and Waste Management Program is supporting the country with a three-year project to enhance its capacity for sound management of hazardous wastes.
In the initial stages,a project management unit will be formed, made up of many representatives from government departments and private organizations. This unit will be responsible for reviewing and assessing Ethiopia's current legal system, which, despite numerous advances in recent years, does not specifically target the recycling of hazardous waste.Once legal gaps are identified, the project will seek to update existing policies and strategies.
Many people in Ethiopia are not aware of the possible effect of environmental damage and the need to report such crimes to the police. To resolve this pressing issue,Ethiopia will be conducting a series of capacity-building activities, including creating awareness-raising pro- grams, training trainers and providing equipment.
Ethiopia will also work to establish a national mechanism for chemicals and waste management by engaging government departments and civil society groups.Authorities will also make budgetary provisions (預(yù)算撥款)in national, regional and institutional planning to en- sure funding for these activities is sustainable even after the project's completion.

  • 12.Being "young" is associated with all the good things in life-beauty,hope,and energy. But youth also has negative associations-impulsiveness,troublemaking,and irresponsibility. This negative side seems to be what society focuses on more, which is why young people have mostly been considered as idle and difficult.
But when it comes to Generation Z-those born between 1995 and 2010-this stereotype doesn't seem to apply anymore.
In Japan, for example,Gen Zers are less likely to buy on impulse, but take into consideration more a product's true value."They're looking at the companies, not just the products," Masahiko Uotani,CEO of Japanese cosmetics company Shiseido, told Bloomberg."They're asking,'Are they really delivering value to the society? Are they promoting diversity and inclusiveness?'"
Gen Zers are also more grounded than we've expected them to be.According to a recent survey by Bank of America, more than half of young adults aged between 18 and 23 said they were planning to buy a house within five years. And they're not just saying it-they are willing to make sacrifices for it,including getting a second job and saving money for a down payment instead of spending it on a vacation.
"Despite their young age, this group is pragmatic and actively planning for their future," D.Steve Boland, head of Consumer Lending at Bank of America, told USA Today."They have a clear vision of how they are willing to help themselves in order to make it happen."
Social issues are also at the center of concern of Gen Zers, who take themselves as a changing force of the world. In India, for example, young people who have just reached the voting age are eager to vote for a new leader who is capable of solving problems that matter the most to them, including pollution, unemployment and women's safety.
As a Gen Zer yourself, what is your plan for the future?

(1)What do the underlined words "this stereotype" in Paragraph 2 refer to?

    A.Being young is good.
B.Gen Zers are born after 1995.
C.The traditional poor impressions on the youth.
    D.The associations with young people.
(2)We can infer from the third paragraph that
    .
A.Gen Zers in Japan are picky
    B.Gen Zers are self-centered
C.Gen Zers care little about products
D.Gen Zers are wise when shopping
(3)What's D.Steve Boland's attitude to the Gen Zers?

    A.Approving.
    B.Negative.
    C.Indifferent.
    D.Critical.
(4)Which of the following words may best describe the Gen Zers?

    A.Confident and independent.
    B.Visionary and responsible.
    C.Persistent and down-to-earth.
    D.Active and creative.

  • 14.Bee see,bee do.At least that's the conclusion of research published earlier this month in the journal PLOS Biology, showing that bumblebees learn to solve problems by watching each other.
In the first study of its kind in insects, scientists constructed experiments that challenged bees to pull strings in order to access rewards of nectar(花蜜).
The scientists hoped their study would throw light on a bigger picture:how social learning spreads through a population.
In the study,Lars Chittka from Queen Mary University of London and his team made artificial flowers and filled them with artificial nectar made of sugar water. They put the flowers under a clear type of plastic and attached a string.
Then they added bees. While most of the insects failed to reach the nectar,a few eventually figured out how to access it,by pulling the string.
The team discovered that they could greatly increase the success rate of the bees by first placing them inside a transparent(透明的) box where they could observe an experienced bee pull the string. Then, when the boxed bees were released, they often knew what to do and successfully pulled the string to obtain nectar.
Next, the researchers added a bee that was experienced in string pulling to each of three new groups that had never seen the experiment before.Within a short time, about half of all those bees were soon pulling the strings. That result suggests the learned behavior could spread from bee to bee, similar to the way cultural ideas spread in other animals, including people.
The experiment suggests that social learning may be more widespread in the animal kingdom than people previously thought.

(1)What happened after the bee pulled the string?

    A.It joined others.
    B.It saw flowers.
    C.It found water.
    D.It got nectar.
(2)What did the boxed bees do after being set free?

A.They watched the experienced bee work.
    B.They imitated the experienced bee.
C.They flew directly to the rewards.
D.They flew back to the box.
(3)Why was an experienced bee added to new bee groups?

A.To reduce the difficulty of the experiment.
B.To watch the process of string pulling.
    C.To carry the experiment further.
    D.To keep the bees' interest.
    (4)What does the study find?

A.Most animals create their own cultures.
B.Strings are particularly attractive to bees.
C.Animals may have good social learning ability.
D.Bumblebees may be smarter than other bee species.

第二節(jié)(共 5 小題;每小題 2 分,滿分 10 分)

  • 15.Parents Model Healthy Eating It should come as no surprise that the more stressed parents are at work, the greater the burden on their family is.(1)
After all,the more time parents spend working, the less time and energy they have to plan and prepare healthful meals.
For years, most studies have focused on the role of working mothers while fathers were ignored. They didn't look at the family as a whole.(2)
,adds a new wrinkle(褶皺)to the relationship between work stress and family nutrition.
Mom's work related stress is still a central factor in low well families eat because they typically do most of the food shopping and cooking. (3)
The study found that when mom or dad experience high levels of work related stress, their families are eating one-and-a-half fewer family meals per week, and the parents themselves report eating fewer fruits and vegetables, more fast food, and are less likely to eat breakfast regularly.
It's worth nothing that the study looked mainly at low income families who belonged to ethnic(民族的)or minority groups. (4)
But the implications are wide ranging.
        (5)
Teaching kids, especially teenagers,to help with grocery shopping and to cook actual meals, instead of just putting a frozen pizza in the microwave, could be an important piece of the puzzle in helping families improves their eating habits.

A.And the role of fathers in particular
    B.But dad's work related stress has a large impact,too.
C.Yet,the kids' stress may influence the families' nutrition, too.
D.So the findings don't necessarily apply directly to other types of families.
E.When it comes to family nutrition, the entire family plays a role even kids.
F.It's also probably not a surprise that this can negatively affect a family's nutrition.
G.It is parents who give their kids a good model to develop a good eating habit.
